Thumbs up New To Forced Induction...(kinda long)

And, I had some questions. I've tried doing searches, but nothing really answered the questions I have. First off, I guess I should start by telling you WHAT I am wanting to do. I had originally wanted to keep stock displacement, and do heads/cam and a blower on my car, but I've got a fear of investing all the money, and then splitting a block, etc. Can anyone tell me the hp limits of the stock block? The car is not much of a track car, as by the suspension set-up, and the fact that it doesn't have a cage, and I really don't want to put one in. It's a street car/highway car and that's about all she's sees. I have been researching different heads/cam set-ups, and have really been impressed with the TSP heads/cam package, and also the g5x2 and the Absolute heads...but, I don't know if my CR would be too high to go with a forced induction motor, or if there is a way to keep the CR in a blower friendly arena? I would LOVE to see 600rwhp..and, in a perfect world, from the heads/cam set-ups I've seen's numbers..I Would *Think* that heads/cam and a blower @12-14psi would be MORE than capable of achieving that goal.

SHould I spring for a 6.0L Iron Block, and would that hold the hp I'm wanting? I was told that you could achieve over 525rwhp with a heads/cam 422...and, then if you threw taht same amount of boost at that motor? For you guys with a similar set-up as what I am wanting to run..what kind of driveability/reliability issues do you have? Had any problems with lifting the heads? A local guy was having BIG time problems lifting, with a mild heads/cam and a 100 shot. How do you get around this? Or, will it always be a problem that can/will happen? Now, if I went with either route..the 346, or the 422..if I had to drive the car from Texas to NM and back, would that be a problem? Assuming the car is built/tuned right?

I read in another post where a guy said you can run well into the 9's with stock injectors, and I would thikn that the set-up mentioned, even on a stock cube 346 displacement motor..would be capable of 9's, in a car with a proper suspension, etc...so would the stock injectors work? Or would upgrading be a wise choice anyways? I'm wanting to do everything right the first time, and spending the money is not going to pose an issue for me, as I am going to build the motor over 3-4 months, and not put it in, until after the car recieves a re-paint..so the engine bay is nice and clean.

If there are any other pointers/helpful advice you could give a newbie to this playing field, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Sorry for being such a long thread!

TIA guys,

Jason

What kind of HP goals are you looking for, and what other requirements are there (emissions, mileage, etc.)

You will definitely want to upgrade the injectors - no question there. What you switch to again depends on how much power you are trying to make.

Also are you looking for a turbo or supercharged setup?

As for blocks the stock block will be fine - i would put a built bottom end in it either way, no question. I wouldn't go for massive cubic inches (422, etc.) as that will really only help you off boost - when you are floored the compressor (turbo/blower) will pretty much determine your power output - the rest of the motor will just effect the psi/rpm that occurs at.

Chris- Didn't know you post here also..I frequent the NTAC board..same name there.

Anyways, the car is a '98 and has 38k miles on it..and as for emissions, I'm not really sure what Texas' emissions laws are at the moment, but here in NM..they have emissions check-points EVERYWHERE, but since my car is licensed in Texas, it's exempt from them. So really, as long as it meets emissions in Waco..I'm fine.

I would like to see 600 to the tires, like I said..I'm not exactly sure which route would be the one to go, turbo, or s/c..as I have seen pretty impressive results from the two different set-ups, and haven't really heard alot of negative feedback for either one. Can't you also adjust the psi with the twist of a ****, if you go turbo? As I stated, I'm new to the game, and I'm looking to absorb as much information about FI as I can, to help me make up my mind on which route is the best for me.

As for uses of the car-it won't serve daily driver purposes, and I doubt it would turn anything higher than some mid-low 13's, I mainly want to be able to play with high end cars, and some bikes.

well for 600rwhp, your going to have to build the engine with low CR pistons, heads will help out. do you want the 600rwhp on pump gas? if so you need it at the most 9.0:1 might go down to 8.7:1 to get it a little easier. you could do it with a stock CI engine running around 13psi

I would like to reach taht goal on pump gas. So, that way my car runs a certain way ALL the time, and then I can improve from there with race gas. I don't want a car that runs badass, and turns out hgreat numbers on race gas, and runs less than exciting on pump gas.
