Good to know... everyone tosses around the magic 600rwhp number on stock heads but they never mention race gas or meth. race gas is like nitrous in my opinion, lol, worth switching to not worry about that.

What's a normal rwhp number on stock heads with pump gas?
(would you mind a link to your build thread?)

Also, do you tought the 317's at all (valve job, bowl blending???) or did you take them straight from a truck and onto your motor?

I took 100% stock low mile 317's and added some PRC Dual valve springs and thats it for the heads!

Not sure how far you can get with stock heads and no meth/race gas....

depends on the motor. Most are 9.5:1 IIRC. But the L33s were 9.9:1.

Back when I put mine together I calculated the 5.3 w/ 317 heads to be 8.6:1

550+ rwhp on 11lbs with a TC78, gt2-3 cam, springs, pushrods, otherwise stock motor in my rx7. It was on 14.5lbs in my friends firebird for awhile before I got the motor from him, taking a beating. It's just a $225 140k mile junkyard 5.3, stock rod bolts still.

LOL, Skinnies, what part of ks are you from? I have fam in Paola.

Seems 317's are the way to go for the higher numbers. Spoken to more and more people who build these a lot and they say the "magic" 600rwhp is not that tough to hit with mild boost numbers with these heads!

I'm currently in Mission, but grew up in Louisburg and know a lot of people from Paola.

Anyone running a 5.3 with 317s and forged pistons and rods? Any recommendations for the pistons and rods? Assuming the pistons should be spec'd with stock c.r. to get ~8.6+:1.

[what is the stock compression ratio of a 5.3 i keep finding 2 different answers?[/QUOTE]

I'm fairly certain most 5.3's are around 9.5:1 compression. 9.49 to be exact. If you ask me, stock 5.3 heads with some port work would be great for your build. I have a stock 5.3 with MILD ported STOCK heads, Lunati cam 230/237 @ .050, 544 lift, 750 QFT carb, 125 shot, it's not boost I know, but I'm just talking 5.3's right now, 486 on motor, 615 on spray!!! I would like to turbo the thing with about 70 or 80 mm, but I'm a loser, I talk a big game but never follow through with much of anything. The 5.3 was put together back when I had a life.
