Default What gears for a roots blown Trans Am?

Its about time to pull the trigger on an S60 but I'm still confused on gear choice for M6 street/strip car.

Car is right around stock weight (3500 without driver) after some weight reduction. Will have a little bit more here soon on the street and even more for the strip. Making 518 RWTQ with similar HP at lower RPM's. Shifting around 6200-6400 RPM's also.

The car is in the most recent GMHTP if you've seen it.

I'm looking to run a 26" tire, but can go up maybe another inch if I have to on the track.

I've heard I may run out of 4th gear with 4.10's which I definitely don't want.

What about 3.90's?

What's the best way to select gears for an FI car? I'm hoping to only do this once.

I would say 3.54's since you are probably going to be blowing the tires off it by making so much low/mid range torque. I would stay lower and that will keep you from having to hard of time launching it.

I would even go a touch lower to a 3.23. Plenty of low-end torque, and it will help your highway roll-on capability.

Yeah I wished that I would have swapped the 3.55's in my Cobra out to 3.27's before I moved to Europe. It would have made gas mileage better and helped for the roll-ons that everyone does here...

Dana 60 lowest option is 3.54. So taller tire could help of course. You will have monster torque at very low rpm so suspension and tire choices will be critical. I would think you will want to run around on something like et street radials 24/7 or possibly the new toyo tq drag radials. nittos dont think would work too great. My nittos on warm days would hook up top of third when my car was six speed. I am trying out the toyos tq as my daily driver tire and keeping my et street radials for track and occasional street fun.

Thats one thing I don't like about supers and the twin screw types..you make monster torque at low rpm but its hard to hook that up. I prefer the way my turbos hit at maybe 3000 range but can ramp them by rpm, time, or gear so can have more chance to hook up. But do have some fun on pure street tires like have on currently new firehawk wide ovals. Glad though they aren't super expensive tires. But sometimes its fun to lay a hundred feet of rubber from a 40mph punch.

He has a dana 60 and the lowest gears he can go is 3.54. Whats left to discuss? It isnt optimal but it will do ok with a taller tire. I would prefer something smaller for sure with a roots setup.

Not sure follow this..
Turbo 400 has like 2.48, 1.48. 1 to 1.
my 4l80e has 2.48,1.48. 1 to 1 and .75
4l60 has like 3.06 first and t56 has like 2.66 first?

3.54 is obviously best choice with dana 60, only real choice. End of story. 4.10 or 3.73 will be a lot of gear with this type of blower. And as said you can go up to 28 inch tires pretty easily not so sure about 30 inch.

If you want more choices you need to get 12 bolt or 9 inch rear. Then you have tons of choices and 3.23 or even 3.08 could be viable options with low end grunt of that type of super.
I don't generally like to drive cars with 2 series gears much. Do see a fair amount of turbo 400 guys running 3.08s on there now. That does give them reasonable highway since they have no overdrive. Still I like my snap around town especially since most turbos dont' really start boosting till around 3000 or so. Supers like roots or twin screw can start to work their magic at like 2000 rpm...

I meant for the cruising around part.

with 3.54s in a 6 speed car, ur cruisin around 1600 in 6th goin 70. (4th gear at 6k is 130)

2.80s with a th400 your going 2600 RPM goin 70, but 3rd tops out at 165ish with the same 6k redline
