Yea, going with the 317's will help drop it down to 10.1, that's as low as I can go without changing the pistons. I'm looking forward to getting this thing back on the road again, that last pass was a ****.

Got the head off the side that was leaking antifreeze, and what do you know, the steel gasket burned through, along with a chunk of the block, take a look.

I have, I did it about 18 months ago.....except it took my cylinder head out too !!!!
In fact...blew a hole through the block/head surface. All the valves were overheated and deformed, and all the pistons fucked.

Total destruction really.

That engine is scrap. I'd imagine your pistons are all destroyed too.

Lean mixtures, too much timing.....whatwever. Either way it has been massive detonation that has caused it.

Actually the pistons looked good except for the one with the chipped ring land, all the other ones looked fine. What surprises me is the head surface cracked, but the piston didn't. I assume the aluminum block has it weak points. I may go back with iron this time.

Until you have removed the pistons, you cannot tell if they are good or not.

I agree, I think I'll go with an iron 408 this time.

Either way, the damage is tuning related.

Yes it is, I agree, it was not tuned to run over 14 lbs of boost. It would have lived forever if it wasn't for that. This was all user error, not fault on the engine at all.

I was just saying that iron or alloy...there would still have been serious damage. Although of course the iron is the stronger platform.

I also doubt its the limit of pump gas. Perhaps with the high CR it is, but more power will be safely achievable on pump, with a lower CR.

There are little 2.0 4pots making 800bhp on pump gas, so a 6.0+ V8 with a bit of boost shouldnt struggle to do similar.

Smaller cylinder bores are less prone to detonation, that's why they can run more boost on less oct. My 8.7:1 is limited to 14psi on 91 oct where as a Evo can run 20-25 psi on the same fuel and I see it done all the time.

Subaru's 99.5mm bore of the 2.5 can easily handle 30psi on pump fuel with mid 8's CR
Which is basically a 4.0" bore, albeit with very short stroke.

My LS is safely running 20psi on 9.5:1 CR on equivalent to 93 octane, albeit with a centri.

A CR of 8.7:1 would easily handle 20psi no problem at all IMO.
