Default change my down pipe?

hey guys i just aquired a trans am with front mount turbo. it has a setup like the picture. im just wondering if there is a purpose to having the single exhaust go to duals and back to single to the catback exhaust.

would i benefit having it stay as is or going to a complete single pipe? im in jersey so i have to have a cat on the car and i figured it would be easiest to switch over to a single pipe and just have a cat welded in place(or at least the shell)

Default

They probably have it that way for ground/chassis clerance in that area. No problem with comverting to a single 3'' as long as everything clears when you are done.
