Default Making the switch from Procharger to Turbo

So since my D1 met its untimely demise due to a bearing failure that took out the impellar, input and output shafts. After lots of consideration I decided that I was gonna make the plunge into a Turbo build. I have never tackled a project like this before let alone much fab work. So in Prep for this build I purchaced a welder and started practicing.

So here is the Plan Keeping the Forged 347 with home ported 243 heads with a 1.60 exhaust valve and stock intake valve. Vic Jr intake and Aarons Elbow. I am changing out the cam to a Turbo cam that Shawn @ Virginia Speced is Specing for me. Gonna be a slight variation of one of there shelf cams to help spool my Turbo.

Now to the fun part. The kit is gonna be a truck manifold based Front mount PT88. With a 4 inch down pipe. I got the Turbo in last week and started fabricating the hot side this weekend. I have the Cross over tacked together and almost ready for final welding. I still need to get a Waste Gate and plumb that into the crossover before I finish welding the Crossover.

I have also been busy building a new Support for the Intercooler. Cutting out the upper rad support in prep for the radiator to be stood up and just working on some things to take some weight out of the car.

There will be more to come. Not in a big hurry to get this back together. If it gets done in time to come out this fall that would be great but I am looking more to have it ready for early next year.

haha I don't have sway bar to work around although I think I have kept this up high enough that it would clear a sway bar if I still had one

Set up looks great, it's ok to have slag on the outside... but just make sure there isn't much on the inside of the pipes... it could lead to small pieces falling off and getting in the impeller

yes. I just bought the welder like 2 weeks ago. I will be picking up a tank of shielding gas next week and changing wire before I finish up all the welding

that's what I was thinking. just double check before you bolt everything together and fire it up. everything sure looks damn good though, especially if you only just started welding this kinda stuff recently. I'm impressed!

Looks like a very nice and simple set-up. I'll have to follow this one! Bob

It is a new peice to this build. I am not sure of the part number but it is the radiator that everyone uses when they stand them up. I got the part number from a thread on here

Sorry to hear about your procharger failure. The turbo build is looking good. If I had the money I would be doing the same thing. Swapping from my D1SC to a truck manifold kit.

Well It worked out o cost me less to build the turbo kit then buy another blower with all the stuff I could sell off the car. Plus having a Friend that got me the Turbo at wholesale cost instead of list was nice

I am planning on bracing it to the motor somehow. Just not sure where yet.

I picked up a tank a sheilding gas last night. switched wires in my welder. Cut all the shitty tacs out of the pipes from the flux core wire and re tacked things together. Also spend some time practicing welding some scrap peices of pipe together to figure out the settings on the welder.

That's how I taught my self... Picked up my old Y pipe and cut it into a million pieces. Although I started with a TIG... I like the process/outcome much better. GL!
