Default Oddball crank pinning question

Odd thought occurred to me tonight:

When doing a cam install, since one has to be down in that area anyway, would it be possible to pin the crank at the same time, (in preparation for a supercharger later) since the pulley has to come off anyway?

It'd certainly a lot of work out of a future Supercharger install...

Can one just call up Vortech, ATI, or Magnusson, and order a crank pinning kit or something?

Probably a or two too deep,

the question would be "how do you cut the keyway?" You would need to mill it (I would not want to chissle it in) right?

Well, the supercharger kits I've seen include the appropriate sized drill bit and a key to go in the hole you've drilled. Presumably, one would acquire a crank-pinning kit beforehand, and use that to make sure the keyway got properly drilled?

I'm just sorta curious if one would be able to get a pinning kit beforehand, do avoid having to do all that nonsense work down there 2x.

oh then thats entirely different from what I was thinking of. I am actually having the crank KEYED when I have the new rotating assembly ballanced. This way the ballancer is keyed to the crank and no matter what I do it can't turn.

check the magnuson kit out ( they ship it out with their vette kits).
it's the easiest to install ( my opinion) and come to think of it, you don't even have to remove the balancer to do it, just the bolt.

No, we're saying the same thing. Pinning = keying.

You drill a hole through the balancer, into the crank, and a key goes through both, so no matter what, they must turn in synch. That way, the torque from/due to the blower doesn't just start spinning your crank pulley on the crank.

Anyhoo, to return to the original question: I imagine this is something that'd be fairly easily doable if one were able to acquire the pinning/keying kit somehow? Any of ya'll know if that's something you can get, either from a supercharging kit company, or from some place else?

Thanks,

-J

Yes, it is smart to do it during a cam swap (you have to take off the balancer anyway during a cam swap). Just drill the hole and tap in the pin(s) just before you do the final TQ on the balancer bolt (you will want the balancer all the way on the snout frist).

You can usually borrow the pinning kit from a shop. Call andy at A&A corvette, he usually lends them out if you send him a deposit and a small fee.

I'm sure a local shop would do the same.

well.....learn something new every day......

so what you are doing is drilling the keyway and installing a "round" key instead of having it milled in and installing a "square" key

Default ati sells a pin kit

Ati (http://www.atiperformanceproducts.com/) sells a pin kit. Then I had a machine shop put a keyway in my stock pully. I had to do it because my TECIII efi system uses a crank trigger for timing.
