Default TC76 vs TC78

I am inthe process of building an LS1/T56 turbo combo for my 1980 Datsun 280ZX. My goal is 600 rwhp at most. My engine is a stock 346 with 317 heads and ls6 cam. The car weights in at just under 3000lbs.

My question is should I bother with the TC78. Hard to believe but I have no intention of going over the 600HP mark with this car. So I'm thinking the TC76 will be more than enough for my goals. The TC76 with the F1 wheel and a .96 A/R is what I'm looking at. I'm looking for a fast street car not so much a dyno queen or 1/4 monster. So the less lag the better.

Both are limited by the 68mm turbine, I really doubt the 78 will make anymore power than the 76.

I'm with this guy. Whichever you can get cheaper is what I'd get.

the 78 will spool slightly slower because of the larger compressor wheel, on top of being more expensive. the 76 will make over 700hp so it should fit your goals just fine

Well they both cost the same last time i checked, but you never see anyone trying to go slower so i vote 78.

Although if you have a bigger budget then i would vote for a Precesion unit.

Correct they are the same price so at least you don't have to factor that in the decision process.

I have always had them at the same price. I can't speak for times before I was around though.

Ya the price seems to be the same so that's not a factor. I was more concered with if its worth it to go with the slightly larger unit. From what I am gathering it wouldn't really benefit me.

For the same price, why would you not? The resell value will be higher IMO also.

The 78 will make a little more power per lbs of boost until both the 76 and 78 reach the limit of the 68 turbine.

So if both are really 68 turbines, would that pose as a restriction at some point?

When you guys say slightly more power do you mean like 8hp or like 20hp per pound of boost?

DrTurbo what would you recommend then for my needs. Does the 78 spool just as fast as the 76? Also is the 78 slightly large in physical size? I don't have a lot of extra room around here! LOL

On a side not DrTurbo, is forcedinductions your website?

take a look at this thread

http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=1436.0

going by what alot of guys see, it seems the TC is done by about ~725ish WHP

it does have insane response, and VERY small packaging

take a look at that thread, the TC was done at about 9psi on a well flowing LS3..... by changing to a GTS 76 he picked up up ~65hp at the same boost and it will support quite a bit more

for the 600whp mark though the TC is a heck of a turbo

I believe hellbents10 or someone on here made over 800rwhp with a tc78 before, I believe with the bigger housing though. I planned on trying to make 725-750rwhp with the bigger housing and 20lbs on my 5.3(through an auto even), but ended up going a different route. I'd say at the 725+ range, just better to look for another option unless you already have the tc turbo, the billet precision 76 is a lot better option imo and not a whole lot more money.
