100% turbo noob, admitting it ahead of time~
i'm looking for advice on the STS rear mounted turbo kits (universal vs bolton?)
100% new to turbos and don't have anything turbo'd BUT really want to get a turbo'd fbody in the near future.
plans:
sell current ws6
but c5, put on a few bolt ons for fun
sell c5
buy turbo diesel truck to get in some offroad fun one day
sell turbo diesel truck
buy a CHEAP kind of "eh" condition lsx fbody and turbo/tt it.
When it comes to the turbo's, Iam new and will admit it off the bad.
I found sts's universal twin turbo kit on their site for a base price of 3k (which seems almost too cheap) I plan to twin turbo something in the future, and am looking for insight. For the price, this seems like the best plan for me, especially being a college kid. I'm not looking to build a crazy track car and am not expecting some miraculous 1000+hp car, but would love a powerful TT daily driver.
Can anybody tell me recommended upgrades to accompany such turbos?
Is there a different turbo recommended over the rear mounted sts' ?
Is it a bad idea to run TT sts' on a completely stock ls1 as they say is common/safe?
When it comes time, I'll be reading more and more into the turbos and have much better knowledge. As of now, I am most interested in the idea and would like to start planning for that day, hopeully happening before I'm out of college (currently a sophamore at Abilene Christian University)
I have seen the sts rear mounted turbos making what I think to be CRAZY numbers.
If there is too much to tell for such a question, please dont give me crap for asking, just let me down easy

-Keep your current WS6
-Installed used 317 truck heads from the classifieds to lower compression
-pick up a used truck manifold single turbo kit (with a pass side C6 mani if you need a/c
-use a Turbonetics TC76 or 78 (or a bigger 76 such as a 76GTS), a Tial 38mm wastegate, and a Tial 50mm Blow off valve.
-60 lb injectors
-twin walbros in your stock tank
-Ebay CX racing intercooler and piping
-Get a good local tuner to dial it in
-Make 600 horsepower to the wheels and start upgrading drivetrain as it breaks
-Have fun!

i have to sell the ws6 to fund the rest :/ or wait even longer with job then school fees...
selling the ws6 will get me enough to do the rest, which will maybe even make me a little money, in which i could buy the sts twin turbo kit outright very soon
bad idea?
i have the money to do what you said, but cant just drain cash in my position as an independent college kid right now ((

Don't sell your current car to buy another car and think you'll be able to afford a turbo kit as well. Just do a fair amount of reading. Best bang for the buck is truck manifolds/317 heads/TC78/z06 cam but there is sooooooo much more to get than just the turbo stuff. Make sure you go into this knowing everything you will need because if you don't you might end up with a kit that you can't use because you don't have the money to get all the other odds and ends which adds up to alot.

Yep, fuel fittings, line, filters, boost controller( at least a manual one), Cobalt 2 bar map, turbo oil system, air filter, NGK TR6 plugs, valve springs. Make sure your prepared to spend some money, you can do it on a tighter budget than most builds on here but it will require some research ahead of time.

Im not a fan. Oil system clear to the back instead of a simple drain to the pan with a front mount. Lots of heat lost in the pipes unless they are wrapped and then they deteriate faster than you can think. STS uses all mild steel piping that rusts even with cermaic coating. The exhaust condensation collects in the turbo and wastegate causing problems. You have to have a filter sock and clean it all the time. STS's supplied turbos are too small. That should be enough reasons.

I've always heard you are best going with a front mount as the exhaust right out of the headers/manifolds is better for spooling that turbo than if it were to travel to the rear where it loses velocity as the exhaust has expanded. Like being shot in the face at point blank range.
