Default Exhaust sounds terrible.....

HELP! I just recently fired up my newly-completed t-76 fed 5.3 project, and the exhaust sounds like an old POS Ford pickup(with crappy glass packs)!

I used 3" stainless that goes over the rear axle and splits into 2 three-inch Spintechs. It sounds good, until it's under load....then it just gets rude sounding. I'll try to post a video here later to help illustrate what I'm talking about. I just ordered a Vibrant 3" "ultra quiet" resonator, and am hoping that this will help mellow it out a little.

So, I'm wondering what types of exhaust setups have been used on single-turbo cars that will keep the tone more tolerable without causing too much restriction for a car that is aiming for 15psi. Any ideas??

your problem is the chambered mufflers.. get rid of them. not only do they sound like ****, they're holding back your combo even with 2.

Most ls motors are raspy sounding but I can imagine yours. Sounds like cherry bomb mufflers right? I hate that sound as well. I'm running the adjustable borla exhaust with the plates with different sized holes to bypass the muffler and control the sound. I have it all going thru the muffler. Prrs like a kitten, smooth mellow tone cruising, no resonance whatsoever. Its kind of restrictive that way tho and one tail pipe does nothing at all. BUT I have an electric exhaust cutout up front under the passenger floor. Best of both worlds, sleeper quiet or drag race open headers!

Suggestions then?? I thought that all mufflers were "chambered", other than glasspacks/resonators? Kinda pisses me off that I spent so much on having these built, only to find that for some reason they sound like crap on my car. I've heard other cars (N/A) that sounded pretty damned good....so I'm kinda at a loss here.

See updated first post for video link....

I ordered a resonator from Vibrant Tech yesterday...I guess I'll wait and see how it sounds after that.

you need to remove the chambered mufflers, period. things are entirely different with a turbo setup. you really only need a small muffler with a turbo setup anyways, and it needs to be straight through. run it with no mufflers and you'll see what i mean.

Actually, I ordered 2 resonators (one for another project). Do you think that I'd be better-off replacing the spintechs with resonators? If not, what style of mufflers do you think would work best? People have mentioned Borla and a few others....but aren't those chambered as well? I just want to be done with this problem.

Thanks for the input.

a single 18" resonator should be fine, or even the 12" if thats what you ordered. if its too loud, just weld in another.

Dynomax ultra flow, magnaflow race mufflers, hooker maxflow, dynatech or borla xr-1. Lots of mustang guys like dynomax ultra flow ss mufflers. That vibrant resonator won't do much.

I have a full 3" exhaust after my turbo and the only thing quieting it is a 3" resonator. Sounds perfect. I ran it without the resonator at first, and while it sounded great at idle, it popped and rasped like hell soon as I got over 2200.

Here's my setup from the back. It's a mandrel 4" with a 4" MagnaFlow then over the axle and capped as seen in the completed picture below. It "T"s of 3" thru a 3" Borla XR1 and out the drivers side. VERY Quiet. I have run 9.31 in the 1/4 with it capped on 17 psi.

The pump has been relocated.
