Silvolite hypers... have some questions
Silvolite hypers... have some questions I picked up a 5.3 with the intention of turbocharging it. While I was swapping oil pans, I noticed that it's a remanufactured motor and has silvolite pistons in it (3472hc). Should I worry about 12psi on these pistons? Are factory pistons cast or hypereutectic? Just looking for some input I guess, maybe someone has had personal experience with these.
Just got off the phone with Keith Black tech support and that's what they said. They recommend .030-.032 on the top ring, so I'm going to pull the pistons this weekend and take care of that.
Hopefully these will survive, for a while at least, with a good tune. It'll be going to Speed Inc when it comes time for that, and I will let them know that I'd like it to be pretty conservative. From everything I've read, hyper pistons are strong enough but tuning is crucial... and when something goes wrong they're not forgiving.
