I'm thinking this spark plug gap is a little too tight???
Car started missing, pulled #7 and found this. #5 looks fine.
I'm guessing I cracked a ring land and it smacked into the plug.
Thoughts?
Update today, 01/22/12
Look at what I found as I removed the intake manifold:
I haven't gotten the head off yet, but will soon. I'm hoping I didn't f up the head or block.

I have to agree as well. I've seen detonation screw up the plugs like that and close the gap but it looks like something assisted it. Pull the heads and you'll have your 100% true answer lol

Engine is stock shortblock. Fuel is 93 octane, timing was set to 13-14 degrees. Only issue with timing, is my timing table for AIT has it adding 1-2 degrees for colder temps, and today I was seeing IAT's in the 30-35 degree range.
It is smoking now as well. I'm already making plans for how to pull the motor out of the car. Then I gotta figure out who to build me a shortblock.

Yeah, #5 plug looked fine, 7 is as you see it, and is oily. The only time I got any knock was cruising in 6th and rolled into the throttle when I should have downshifted. I never saw any knock at wot. Timing was in the mid 10.4-10.6 range.
I'm just hoping the heads are fine.

White.Lightning was taunting me on the highway in his dd ford ranger and I did a ricer flyby in 4th gear when the motor let go. As I softly shifted into 5th, he saw a puff of white/grey smoke and knew something was up. Problem was I was 40 miles from home. I took it easy and limped it home. Pulled #7 just out on a hunch and sure enough, bent spark plug electrode. I'm wondering if me running a FAST 90 didn't lead to me running lean in #7 even though my tune said I was running rich in the 10.4-10.6 range.
Maybe it's time to go back to an ls6 when the motor goes back together.

Ive dealt with issues on 7 before, its not the intake. Very likely it was a combo of a couple things. First, good chance you just got a bad tank of 93. Second, are you running the coolant steam tubes to the rear heads? Last and very unlikely would be stock fuel rail and no return.
The fact that you are not really pushing the car at all leads me to believe it was fuel and possibly hot rear heads due to no steam vent.
Also what plug are you runnings? I always advise on running the ngk tr8s or what ever the part number is for the 8 heat range. No reason not to.

Alchemist sorry to see this happen to ya in such a short period of time. On the bright side you had that combo working pretty good for you. A mild built 347 would prob suit you well. Diamond pistons, callies rods and stock crank wouldn't be to hard on the wallet either

I have my own man-fund account, but she still questions how much money is 'wasted' on the car...lol oh well.
I don't think it was a bad tank of 93, but it has been in the car for over a month or so. I went to a cars & coffee meet this morning and logged data the whole way out and I didn't get any knock at all in PE. I got a couple little 1-2kr when I rolled into the throttle in 6th, but it was most likely burst knock.
You're correct on the no steam tubes. I have the FAST intake and the rears are blocked. Maybe I'll go back to an LS6 and run the ls1 steam tubes.
Fuel is aftermarket rails with a rear driver's side feed, with a front crossover, to the rear on the passenger side. Stock return line.
Plus were NGK TR6's. I guess I could have gone colder. Maybe I should have run the methanol sooner rather than later. Hindsight is 20.20.
I think I was pushing it too hard. I really do beleive I just pushed the piston to the point of failure. I was seeing upwards of 200kpa at 6800 rpm. The heads are 64cc chambers, so my compression ratio was in the 10.5-10.7 range, never really checked it though.
That's what I'm hoping I can do. Pick up pistons and rods and whatever else I need and have my block cleaned up and assembled into a solid 347.
Like I said, I'm happy I made it home. It's cold today, IAT's were in the 30-32 degree range and it's windy. Breaking down 40 miles from home would've sucked big time.

I say that you should pull some female psychology on her. Wait for someone to offer a "SALE" on a forged shortblock, then buy it. Subtract the "SALE" price from the normal retail price and then tell her how much money you saved your household today.

Not sure on the fast but if you get a pre ls6 intake coolant tubes you can make it work for the ls6. Just takes a little patience and time to bent the tubes to fit the intake on top. Also you have to grind all the casting lines on the bottom of the intake for it to clear. Well worth it though.
