Default H/C/I/E to FI

So I've been thinking about going to a FI setup for years, yet never really decided to spend the money. I've had my WS6 for several years and slowly have built up the motor to what it is today. Here's what I've currently got in the car:

224/230 XER Comp Cam on 112LSA
Patriot Stg II heads (bought from my cousin several years ago. Supposedly they were milled .030 to give ~11:1 CR)
Jet Hot LT headers. !Cats 3" True duals w/ X-pipe running through 2 bullets
FAST 92 with NW 90mm TB
stock MAF
Aftermarket lid
!EGR
!AIR

I'm in the process of tuning the car since I just got the FAST on. The last time I went to the track was probably 5 years ago and ran a 12.3 @ 118.9 on a crap tune (with a LS1 intake!!!). That was before the true duals and FAST 92/90. In essence, I have no idea how much power the car is currently making at present.

My desire is to get to 550-575rwhp, and without going to a bigger motor or N20, I am confident I'm not going to get there unless I go FI. I thought it would stop now, but its only getting worse FYI I had a turbo car way back in high school and I loved it. I'm ready to experience the fun of FI on a V8. The bottom end is still stock, so I want to keep lower boost until I'm ready to upgrade the bottom.

I will be going with a supercharger. I'm leaning towards a D1SC. I would like to go SC for ease of install, tuning, etc. In doing some research, I've seen people discuss running boost on applications that have similar compression ratio than what I'm currently running. My plan is to go to a 317 head for lower CR. Selling my other heads for these will net me some extra cash. I'd like to keep this on pump gas.

Now for the questions:

1. Should I sell the FAST for an LS6? Will I be able to get close to my goals with the LS6? Reason I consider this is because, if I don't need it, why not sell it and use the extra money?

2. I know the LSA112 is not considered ideal, but how much could I expect to gain on a blower cam over this cam? Is there a better cam that will allow me to keep the wonderful sound I experience every time I fire up this car AND be more blower friendly?

3. After reading about some of these higher compression setups I'm not sure if I would need to change the heads or not. I can do the work myself, so its not an issue, but I want to be careful with the motor.

To sum this novel up, this car is not DD. This is just the next step. I also want to be sure slapping on a SC doesn't put me over the power threshold for the stock bottom, until I'm able to add forged internals.

Thanks in advance for the help/guidance/flaming, etc.

I'm in the same boat. I just picked up some 317's yesterday. Going to have the cleaned up at WCCH in reseda..

I have a ls6 engine with forged rods, pistons, arp 2000 rod bolts and had my piston rings gapped for the extra heat I'll be seeing..

Hopefully one of my ls1 friends will want to buy it.

Where were you able to get your 317s from? What's the going rate for a pair? Straight bolt-and-play correct?

Craigslist, 100 bucks. Yes they go straight on. But you need the larger head gasket to match the heads

Research TallyTransam's H/C to turbo build. Basically the same boat you are in and now runs 10.4's with a budget single turbo, stock shortblock setup.

I'm running rear mount T76 bb Turbo with stock everything except LS9 cam on my 2002 Z28. Came with LS6 intake. Just did 551 rwhp @ 10 psi boost.

Sell fast and get ls6, sell heads get 317s, keep cam for now it will work fine. Put at least a 76mm turbo and keep the timing low.

ok with a 76mm turbo and 317's on pump gas, what compression would you like to see? especially for a daily driver... 9-1 or 9.5..

E85 doesnt really interest me because I want to drive my car as much as possible and pump gas sounds right up my alley...

Either 9.1 or 9.5 would be good. 9.5 would give you a sportier feel when out of boost for daily driving, but 9.1 will allow you to boost a little higher and make more peak hp on the dyno (plus better gas mileage when not in boost). If you go with the LS9 Cam install (proven cam, that's what i did, 550 rwhp on stock bottom), you should be able to attain your 550-575 rwhp goal pretty easilly. Also, Intercooler and Methanol/Water injection is a must to be safe on the stock bottom end.

Wrap all exhaust and spend a few bucks more for the ball bearing turbo. It's worth it.

My builder is right up the road from you in Bakersfield. Jim from CalSpeed and Performance. I was hesitant on spending the money to have someone else do it, but soon realized that this is a whole new game and it was just more cost effective for me to have him do it, rather than me do it twice! Ha. He did a fantastic job on the build and tune. Experienced guy who's been doing this for years. Check him out www.calspeedperformance.com
Tell him "Hayden referred him, the blue convertible he just built".
He can help you with any technical questions too even if you don't use him for the build. Great guy.
