228R cam with turbo? Any one running a 228R cam with 112LSA and a turbo, if so how do they like hit? Would it hurt performance being turboed over a stock cam? |
I hope not bc I spec'd mine out last year and plan on using it for my build. Mine is a tad different tho 228/228 116LSA Jay |
mine is slightly bigger than a 228R and on 111+2 LSA. numbers in sig. works just fine |
I was looking at the ms3 but thought bigger the cam worse it "bled" boost off, why i choose 228R, or is ms3 to big |
The specs on the 228r cam are about perfect for a 346 street car. I say about because it runs on XER lobes and those are not the most valve train friendly ramp rates. The valve events are great though, basically the bigger brother to the speed inc tu1. |

(the cam only numbers were also through a ten bolt, the turbo numbers were through a 9in.. same dyno for both though) this also why you hear people say just run the cam you have, if you already have one. id go 228R, it has a better power band than the MS3 |

it will bleed some boost, but if anything itll just help the motor survive a lil longer haha. ive always been a fun of running more of an 'N/A' cam in a turbo app because i have yet to see a so called 'N/A' cam not do well under boost. if you make good power n/a, add approx 30hp for every psi you plan on running. my car made 380 before the turbo. then i added 9psi and according to the 30hp/psi it should be around 650, it made 630 which is pretty darn close considering thats a VERY rough estimate. Try running a TSP giant under boost. It will make power but it's not a good cam for boost, yet it runs like crazy N/A and on spray. You will find the more you turn up the boost on a more N/A style cam it will lose more power compared to a correctly spec's turbo cam. i was more referring to those of us who go from h/c to turbo and that we shouldnt really shy away from n/a cams at that level because its not really worth the effort. the car is gonna make more than enough power. when going through the hassle of building a motor, by all means get a turbo cam spec'd |
that cam is not perfect for boost, but it does a damn good job. i used it with my d1 and 346 and made great power. its also a great DD N/A. mine was 114lsa though. 393rwhp NA before better fuel and UD pulley. 35thcamaross is another guy i know with boost and that cam. and no probs with that cam at all. |

starting out though, theres almost no reason to go through a cam swap. most people running the giant still probably have a stock bottom end, so they wont be able turn the boost up too high anyway. |
yeah as mentioned....the camaro I was talking about is making 11 lbs of boost with the 228, and making 668rwhp. seems like he's running a 4.x pulley, and still has the ability to go all the way down to the 3.4 |
Sorry for delayed response but thanks guys! Sounds like u can do alot with stockshort block with n/a cam, excited to get this build done |
what would be the difference between 224r or a 224/228 with boost? i know the lift is abit more on the 228 but how does that effect in boost mode? |
definitly would like to hear more peoples results with this cam |
I am running a 224/228@114. Have yet to get it on the dyno, but am in to see others results as well. ***Edit... Just checked the pics from my build and I was mistaken. Its 224/230@114. Comp cams XER273HR-14*** |
I got a 228r 114lsa,getting ready to put kenne bell on! |
im thinking im gonna go witht he 228 cam. about 75% sure |
as mentioned earlier im running speed incs SI4 cam works great for me 4.25 blower pulley SI4 228228 .588.588 113 |
nice, believe im at 98% sure now lol. only think that would convince me of getting a slightly smaller size is if those are significantly cheaper lol |
i have the ms3 and im going to have to try it on boost. there's not much info on it not sure if to go turbo or charged yet tho. 600+ hp is good enough for me... |
