Main Bearing clearance ?
Main Bearing clearance ? Okay 05 Lq4 motor build, future turbo! Checked the Main Bearings with plastigauge and was on spot with .001 in, manufacturer tolerance is between .0008-.0021 With that being said I decided to check them with a dial and came up to roughly .0015. Question is am I too low or can I use these bearings? Most look to be running .002 and over for turbo builds and thereabouts. Bummer that it came up short! I just bought a brand new set of clevite bearings, and didn't want to buy another if I don't have to. Any thoughts or suggestions? I will also be running a Melling high volume pump 10296 maybe that will help with any offset...?
when you say roughly thats not close enough when your talking .001 difference, that .0005 can kill a engine, did you check all of them or just one or two, some times you can move half shells around to get better clearances,

On the cast iron engines the general rule that works is .001 for every inch of shaft, that would put your required at .0025 on LQ4 or LQ9 block. .0015 is a bit tight, and .001 is danger tight for iron engines.

I know we usually end up mixing and matching main bearings all the time because for the required clearances in the engines we build at the shop.
