Default Special kind of Twin turbo

Has anyone ever thought of using a smaller (60 series turbo) on the passenger bank of a 6.0L twin turbo motor and a larger say (76 series turbo) on the driver side???

I'm thinking that the 60 series would spool instantly and give tons of torque down low and once the air velocity got to the point where the big turbo kicked in you would have the best of both worlds.

I would think that with a FAST XFI system you could adjust fuel with the small turbo and then when the bigger kicked you could ramp up the fuel map.

What does everyone think?? Am I missing something??

I have seen a setup like this used on a ford GT that was running at the Texas Mile. Didnt see the owner or it run so cant tell how it worked.

I wouldn't

There are always ways to have quick response.

1. Size the hotside correctly
2. Run a spool valve on a single (or twins if going big)
3. Compound Charge
4. 2 Step

It would be much better to just do a compound setup where the smaller turbo feeds the bigger

I would think the back pressure would be unreal on the small turbo once the big turbo took over.
now if the turbos where joined sum how from bank to bank as the back pressure started building in the small turbo it would feed over to the big turbo keeping equal pressure on each bank

Sequential setups are factory on a few cars... Honestly, it's not worth the hassle. You'd be better off keeping it simple and going with two identical quality units spec'd for your application.

Very intrestin topic....Ive been looking into a compound set up for quite some time now. Its a little mind boggling, but looks doable. Ive wanted to run a 67mm turbo feeding a 88 or bigger on a 408. I see no real benifit from a set up like this over properly set up turbo combo but it does have the wow factor and sounds wild!

Im going to do it before the end of the year....

Look up the porcshe 959 twin turbo diagram, they do just what the OP is talking about, setup just like you suggest.

I work at caterpillar, and on our high altitude C-175 20 cyl 797F truck engines, we compound 6 turbos the setup is about the size of a full size truck haha...

I'm just trying to find a way to make a lot of torque down low in the rpm range (say 1500-1800 rpm). I hate big 3500 rpm stall convertors.

A lot of people say its one or the other but I don't think it needs to be.
Check out this website I found that talks about parallel, sequential turbo setups. Great article!
