Default Need advice in engine choice

The ls1 in my ws6 decided to spin a bearing and now I'm in a spot were I can either forge my ls1 (still dont know if there is any damage done to the block 106,xxx miles) or buy a forged iron 6.0 from tsp...
Now the reason for this is I've heard a lot about the ls1 being to troublesome the piston slap and read about it needing to be honed every now and then with FI?, but its aluminum being lighter and less heat.

Now the iron I just see more heat and heavier(heard it can be an issue with bumps and turns), but stronger and good with fi...

I would like to hear from some of you guys if you would switch out for iron or if you're ls1 is handling well...

I'm planning on just trying to break 800 whp but will get there in stages. Thanks

Well there is people here pushing LS1s very high, probably not the bestest choice for FI but it can be done with the right parts and tuning. As far as iron blocks go "no displacement for replacement" That extra weight over the aluminum blocks will make up its self for the horsepower you can make with iron blocks. IMO I would go with a 6.0 LQ4 2004 or newer, but IT CAN be done with a aluminum block.

There's more to block strength than material. Ls2's and l33's have very strong aluminum blocks. The ls1 block isn't bad but a few have claimed losing ring seal over time for whatever reason. With a goal of 800 wheel, you may want to go with something a little sturdier. You may be able to offset the price difference between and lq4 and an ls2 by selling what you already have. That said, the weight difference isn't going to kill you but adding unnecessary weight sucks.

I've been running my ls6 for 2 years with 670 623tq to the wheels and I drive it all the time to and from the track to work and back everywhere. I like the 6.0 though just because of the cubic inches you can build . Either way will be fine. I have both I have a 6.0 in my fairmont works good too even with 182,000 on it .haha!

I have never measure the sleeve thickness of a ls2, but I know the L33 aluminum 5.3 has .240 thick sleeeves and should be plenty strong for a pretty reasonable price.

I'd go with a 390 from aes, they have great customer service and good pricing

Thanks guys the ls2 sounds like the engine to go with, but it just adds more to the budget and this car will never come out the garage if i just keep adding lol since this is my first car I am trying to avoid as much hassle as I can...sounds like an lq4 will be the choice and keep the ls1 to learn from and build it myself then stick it somewhere under a hood for fun
