Default Torque converter stall

Ok, my first turbo engine. And this engine makes hp and torque around the same rpm range...5200 - 5300. Do I use a 5200 stall converter ? Because that's what I'm hearing from some sales guys. I'd be on the converter practically all the time... Does that sound right ???

If you're hp peaks at 5300, you don't need a 5300 stall.
Let's say that your engine make 95% of hp from 4800 to 5800 rpm. That gives you a 1000 rpm range to work with. That's enough range for the converter to properly couple through the quarter mile. For that example, a 4800 stall (under full boost) is a good choice.

So, I guess ,just pick a stall at 500 under peak torque ?

You can usually get close if you have a converter that is 500 less than the hp peak. It really depends on the power curve. If the hp falls off quickly after the hp peak, then you may have to tighten up the converter a little more than normal. If you only race 1/8 mile, you can loosen it up just a bit.

Why not call a company and let them spec you one?

FTI, Coan, UCC, Neal Chance are just to name a few.

I did call one! he told me to get a 5300 stall ! I drive this thing on the street ! lol. I have a 5000 now, and it seems to high..I ran it behind the BBC I used to have in it before I built this turbo LS 6.0. I was thinking about a 4500 ? but these turbo engines almost match hp to tq throughout the rpm range, so picking a converter here for a turbo street / strip car is a bit new to me, I figured turbo cars need to work with a bit of grunt ! not free wheelin up to the 5000 range,,,,,,,,,am I wrong ?

Then whoever spec'd that needs their head checked. Call up Greg@ FTI, real nice guy and will get you going in the right direction. I don't what to tell you to do with that converter. That's just too much stall in my book for a turbo setup. I would assume its a fairly mild setup and nothing out of the box?

It's a completely stock LQ4. 6.0 LS. With upgraded valve springs ,100,000 miles untouched. 7578 turbo. Power glide 3.75 gear 2950 lbs.. Rear wheel dyno 465 hp at 5300, 485 tq at 5200. Power drops off fast at 5400. I'm thinking shifting at 5500 - 5600 and running it out at about the same. Right now it's doing low 10 s with 9.5 lbs boost and 20 degrees of timing. If I can get the right converter maybe it will put me into the 9s and build a little less heat as well.

OK Ive talked to 3 different guys and 3 different answers,,,which is understandable I guess. The real problem here is not knowing where my peak torque will be... so, I /we can determine were an ideal stall speed would be most efficient. I did Dyno on a rw dyno, but it was with a 5000 stall converter,,and we never got see if it made any better numbers down low...

Is anyone running a stock 6.0 with a 78 mm turbo, that has a lower stall and has done any testing as to which stall to go with ???

We've had good luck with PTC in Alabama, give Lane a call.

I doubt you will want lower than a 3500 and bigger than a 4500.

Get a Ptc converter, do it right and never have to again.
