Looks like I found the culprit. #6 plug is black as can be. Coincidently this is the only cyl. that has an aftermarket coil pack on it. lol I will be putting 8 new coil packs on soon as they come in. I switched over to AR3933 plugs which are the same heat range. I want to run them and see how they act with the tighter gap before I go colder.

I'm not convinced 1 plug that looks out of tune was causing "really bad" layover....only on the top end. I guess the coil could be acting up over a certain rpm.....but it seems it would be more than one cylinder going rich to cause really bad power loss. Regardless....put a matched set of OEM coils on there damnit lol.

If they were all gappd at .040 then that could cause it IMO.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping for a test hit next week when the other coils come in. I ordered 8 new ones and made up some new brackets to hold them down by the oil pan on each side. For some reason Amazon sent 1 coil and the other 7 are coming later.

I agree with you guys, I think between the 1 bad coil and all 8 plugs being opened up too much (from heat probably) that caused my issue. I hope to be able to report some good news after a few test passes.

Sure did Garrett. It ran flawless on Saturday. First pass of the day it went 8.90!
Made a total of 3 passes all in the 8s with a best of 8.68 @ 155mph. Needless to say I am really happy with that considering it was @ 18psi with a very conservative tune.

Thank for checking on me,
Frank

What coils were on there and what did you go with?

It had the D585 truck coils (round with heat sink). I switched to the D581 truck coils (square with triangle coming out of the side).

Very nice series of passes. Great to see you getting more of the performance out of this car, like it was built for. I'm running the same D585 coils in my Nova. You have me wondering now if that might be why mine doesn't seem to pull much above 6,400 rpm.

How high did you turn up the engine with the new coils?

I usually shift at 6500 but my log on the 8.6 pass showed a 6700 rpm 1-2 shift. The engine pulls hard up to the 7100 rev limiter though. I just shft at less in hopes of keeping the engine happier for longer.

That makes me wonder also about my power loss over 5500 rpm with the heat sink coils. Did you check the resistance in the bad coil?

Yes. I checked them all and they were all the same. This doesn't tell you too much though. Under load is a different story, also heat, etc.

If you have one bad coil you should see one bad plug.

Did you find the bad plug only after going wot then shutting it down right away? Or did it look like that after normal driving?

after normal driving it looked like that. I didn't really notice it was bad driving around. Not that I replaced it I noticed though. It is more responsive and smoother now.
I'm not 100% the coil pack was it. I could have had a severely fouled plug too. I changed everything at once so there is no way of knowing for sure.

Gotcha, that seems to be how it is in racing. I thought my valves were floating, did rockers, springs, pushrods all at once. Didn't really help all that much. Il pull the plugs again and check
