Default Forged ls1, l33, or lq4?

Im thinking about getting the on3 no ac turbo kit, and that being said my stock ls1 wont handle the power im wanting long term. I could either put a forged set of rods/ pistons in the ls1 or get a jy l33 or lq4. Im guessing the forged ls1 will cost the most, which will be able to take the most abuse? If I did a jy motor id prefer to keep the stock bottom end. Im looking for 800rwhp max capability. Since I have a stick car spool is going to be important so Im wondering if there will be a major difference there, even with a custom cam/ matched turbo for the build. Thoughts?

I think it would be cool to stick with the LS1. Considering how their reputation it seems like everyone ditches them for iron blocks or LS2/3s. I'm planning a turbo build in the future after I finish school and really want to keep and forge my LS1 (347, single turbo, t56) just to not do the usual 390, 402, 408 stroker that everyone does or anything similar. I don't have enough experience to give you a real answer but thats just my opinion from a personal perspective.

I think the thing is that if you have a decent shape ls1 you would sell the long block and use that money to buy an iron block for cheap and forge it. I just forged my ls1, but it would have probably been cheaper to buy a junkyard 6.0 and forge it and sell of the ls1.

Wouldnt forging the 6.0 be around the same cost as just forging the ls1? Around here an lq4 goes for around $1k for a short block I think. If I did a 6.0 I think the stock bottom end should be good for my goals or pretty close as is right?

Which turbo? Most the on3 turbo's I have seen have a small turbine and would run best on a 4.8~5.3L. You really want a 75mm min turbine on a 6.0L

Id get the on3 kit without a turbo, and get something specd for the engine combo I decide to use.

Would a 5.3 with the ideal turbo for that displacement spool slower than a 6.0 with its own matched turbo?

It all depends on the turbo and combo. Need to pick an ET/power goal and go from there.

In that case id like to get the car trapping in the 130-140mph range in the 1/4. Its essentially a full weight m6 car (lets say 3500 race wt) so Im thinking id need between 600-700rwhp to get there? I wanna say for the sake of et the alu blocks would make it easier to get the car hooking up compared to the extra #100 from the iron blocks, but I could be wrong.

Yea I would definitely stick with alum for that reason, and a honest 700 maybe a little more being manual should get you there but you might want a little more turbo at that weight. The on3 might hit 140's with a manual but I think those cars are more like 3700 at full weight.

So sticking with the aluminum options, stock L33 or forge my ls1? If I stick with an on3 kit for clearance I'll need to stick with a small frame turbo, or stand up the radiator to run a bigger turbo like a BW or some sort. What would be some good turbo choices for either of those? Something like a 7675, or an s475 if I had more room? Thanks for the input it's greatly appreciated!

Yes A 75/83 bw or 76/75 on a forged ls1 or L33 will take go pretty far. The L33 is hard to beat if you can find one.

im making almost 800 on my 7175 rear mount L33. We actaully are pushing it farther next week. think its got 850-900 in it on pump and meth. So you dont need a huge turbo to make power on the 5.3s. Just the right turbo. c5z manual.

Are you runnin the stock bottom end? Do you forsee the shortblock being reliable at those power levels?

i found a ls6 block for cheap im gonna build. all you need are pistons and rods. in the end it will be a lighter block capable of handling the same power as a heavy 5.3.

ill just be sad if it blows up i cant sell it or trade for l33.

I really like a 5.3/TC78 combo or even better a 5.3/7675 combo.

Very quick to spool, great torque as a result of the quick spool and won't choke up nearly as bad after 5500rpm with the 7675.

I plan on running 15-16 lbs most of the time. Which is 750-780. I'm buying a second shortblock to most likely forge. Mine is a stock bottom end l33. We plan to push to 20-21lbs soon. Check out my build thread as I think that we found the sweet spot turbo wise. Maybe a 7475 or 7675 if you want over 1k.

7675 will rpm better. TC78 will out spool it by a hair, negligible IMO.

Of course a BW S476R with a 83mm turbine and 1.10 AR will really wake up over the two mentioned turbochargers. Those are proven combo's though that work well. The BW unit moves a lot more air though. It is a bit harder to package though.

Would the 476r spool roughly the same as the others? It'll make enough power to be scary with any of them so I'm mostly concerned with spool time. I think that if I stand up the radiator with the on3 kit the BW turbos will fit?

first hand experiance mine is a 6 speed as well and it spools nutty fast on the street.

check into the 7175-7675 turbos.
