Default gear ratio for powergide

Starting build for 89 mustang coupe. Considering powerglide for 5.3 turbo. 650 hp. 28" tire. What gear ratio would work best for street car? Like the powerglide for weight and simplicity. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Never heard of a 1.69 glide? Most common gear set is 1.76. Hi gear is always 1:1. You have no choices there. You gear the rear end to the trans.

Assuming 3200lbs race weight and 650hp you should trap around 137.

So to gear the car to hit around 137 at 6000rpm on a 28" tire.

Depends on converter slip, but a 3.55 gear would be close.

That would allow you to cruise 50mph at about 2200rpm. 3.27 would be slower at the track but will allow better cruise.

3.27 51 at 2000 rpm
3.08 51 at 1900 rpm

Again those numbers will vary with converter slip.

Thanks, I looked it up. All kinds of taller gears for first. I have enough trouble with my 1.76 that I couldn't imagine wanting a taller gear. Certainly doubt the OP would see any gains with a taller first gear in a 650hp semi-heavy car.

That is because most people with turbo cars with glides tend to gear the rear too tall. It is all about getting the weight you have moving as fast as possibile. I am running a 1.80 gear set and a 4.10 rear gear, for a street car that does not see much highway use with a 1.76 glide I would gear it 3.73 in the rear. Converter has a lot to do with it as well, got to have the whole package for it to work right and you have to be able to get it to hook.
