Default Forced induction question???

Not really a genius on turbos so im gonna sound pretty stupid in this thread (please just bare with me). Ive been saving for a little while now to do something big on my 99 SS. Of course id love to turbo it! Heres my worry about getting a turbo. Im getting close to 135,000 miles on my LS1. im thinking a turbo would easily blow my motor or shred my 4L60E tranny. I also dont want to spend all that money for a turbo setup and not get a significant HP gain. So my question for you more experienced guys is will my motor and trans be able to hold a turbo (looking at a 67mm precision) running 10 pounds? How much HP gain would this turbo add running 5 to 10 pounds? Also the motor is pretty much completely stock other than a few bolt-ons.

Thanks Guys!

67mm should be able to get you 500whp if you have a cam. 4L60 starts to becomes the weak spot there. It'll live for a bit if you keep RPM down. And don't put the pedal down in overdrive.

The 4l60e is on borrowed time if you make 1HP more than stock
I wouldnt even try running that trans behind a turbo anything unless you built the hell out of it or replaced it with something better.
It sucks to get everything together and running good and as soon as you get on it and it starts to pull the trans goes bye bye.

I'm making 775rwhp on a cam only 131000 mile ls1 on 16psi. I run 21psi on the street. Somewhere in the high 800s close to 900rwhp range I'm guessing at 21psi. Push a little water but other than that it runs like a bullet lol. S475 turbo. I'm 6speed though.

What's a good tranny that will hold up? You think a 4L80 would work?

Ill be upgrading to a built 4L80E in hopes to see around 1krwhp with a forged short block. They're not cheap to build though. for the horsepower that you're talking about you could run a stock 80E with a shift kit and probably be fine

Stock 4L80s with a trans go HD2 installed do pretty damn good up to 800 flywheel HP.

No building them isn't cheap, but they are hard to beat in terms of all around performance. Reliable, has overdrive, can be controlled electronically, retains lockup even at rediculous power, and can take a beating before you have to replace anything.

A rollerized 4L80 with the drums upgraded has less rotating weight than a 4L60e and uses less power. It'll also handle 3 times as much power as the 60e.

Personally I think with the miles you have, you'd be better of finding a 5.3 or rebuilding your existing motor for boost. Then you won't have to spend the money of doing an FI setup that may be sketchy at best on when it will go boom.
