Default 6.0 Heads?

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I have heard of both iron 6.0 heads and aluminum 6.0 heads...

What is the difference between the two? Obviously the iron is heavier, but are there any others? Is there a differant code for each? Which is more suitable for boost?

Irons came on the 00' and below trucks and maybe 01'. I can't remember.

For forced induction you want the aluminum ones. The will help control heat and detonation better.

Thanks, F8LPONY!

So, the aluminum ones come on the '02 and up trucks, then?

Which are the LQ9?

02'+ for sure, maybe 01' also. I am not 100%.

LQ9 and LQ4 both have aluminum heads.

LQ9 is the Escalade 345HP motor and LQ4 is the standard truck motor.

Heads are the same I believe. The LQ9 has more compression but I am pretty sure that is due to pistons and not head design.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to correct any mistakes I have made. If not ask this question in the Truck forum.

Rob Raymer tested both a while back on his turbo car. Should be in a search.

Search is not forthcoming. And Rob is no longer here. Does anyone else know?

Thanks for everything so far...

I would not run iron heads, they are heavier and will retain heat more than aluminum heads. All 6.0 heads should be aluminum is they are 2001 and newer castings (off the top of my head).

I believe the exhaust ports are different on the LQ9 vs. the LQ4. They have D shaped exhaust ports and are more like the LS6 heads.

So I believe it sorta goes like this: LQ4 is comparable to the LS1's (with less compression), LQ9 is comparable to the LS6's (with less compression). But don't take this as fact, this is just what I have gathered in reading and research over the years.

no thats not it, lq4 and lq9's are identical, nobody has been able to tell a difference, the ports and volumes are the same. both ports are D similiar to the ls6 heads.

As y2khawk put it, the reason they have different casting numbers is because of were they are cast and made of different stock.
