Default MSD 2 step with auto trans (Updated Track Results)

I don't have a trans brake and want to hook this to my brake switch.

I'll likely end up around 3000 rpm.

I understand that once activated, it won't re-arm until approx 2000 rpm.

So it should be ok. Just wondering if you guys have anything funny happen on the street with it wired this way?
I was thinking maybe add a switch inline to shut it off when not racing.

Ron

You are correct, if set to 3000 it won't activate again until RPM drops to 2000.
You can use an arming switch in series with the brake pedal, this way you can permanently disable it for street use. At the dragstrip flip the switch up and there you go

I installed the 2 step and tested it in the driveway.

I found some info on how to set the timing and fuel while activated. Basically the same as W/O a 2 step. Lean with a lot of timing.
I'm pretty conservative, so I set it to 2400 rpm, 12.5:1 AFR, and 29 deg of timing.
I saw just over 2 psi. I figured it would go a touch higher at the track with my silencer removed. It's pretty restrictive.

Not a lot of boost, but a start. Given that it takes .5 second on a normal run to go from 85 KPA to 116 KPA, I'd reduce that from the spool time.

At the track, it made right at 3 psi on the 2 step.

First pass, I got it on the 2 step, but didn't give it enough throttle to build boost. Typical me forgetting my game plan at the line.....

Car ran 9.84 @ 145.35. Hmmm, promising, it didn't spin once boost hit. World record mph for the car as well.

2nd pass I got it hard on the 2 step, bumped into the 2nd stage light, floored it and released the brakes. The car moved good for about 10 feet then wasted the tires.

Reviewing the log, I left at 121KPA, and within .9 seconds was at full boost with the tires smoking.

I didn't bother with another pass. No track prep and radial slicks just don't work.

So, this is hugely promising. My first runs with the car it would lazily build boos not getting to full boost until 100ft out in. Where it would fog the tires....

Now I'm seeing full boost in less than a second, so I've essentially moved the fog the tires point 90ft closer to the starting line.....ha!

I believe with more timing...maybe 33 degrees, and a leaner AF, maybe 13.5:1 I can get more boost for the leave.

Still on 15 PSI. E85 of course.

What boost controller do you have? I know the eboost2, boost least, and ams units allow you to have a launch setting, and then multiple settings down the track. If you don't have one, that should be your next step to control the launch boost for consistent launching. Nice job Ron!

Thanks guys.

I think the car will handle the power on a well prepped track. I'll go try a better track here soon. Our track has really gone down hill the last few years. It's sad actually.

I also think it will calm down a bit when I get less gear in it.

Glad to hear you are making progress Ron! PIR sucks, its such a terrible track. At your power level you may as well just start running at Woodburn exclusively or its going to be a tough slog.

Sarg, 3.73 with a 30" tire. I cross the line at 6850 or so. Admittedly, my converter isn't turbo friendly either.

Jon, my brain is stuck on what PIR was like five years ago. It out hooked Woodburn. But the current management just doesn't get it that fast cars would return if they would keep the track up.

I will get to Woodburn, and hope I have friends with trailers there! I'll have to drive it there.....

Dang you must be having some serious slip. By the calculator I found with a 30" tire and a 3.73 you should be capable of 164 mph with zero slip. That is like 13% slip I would guess.

Sounds right. Add boost and it slips more. I noted that when I went from 12-15 psi.
Maybe just replace the converter and leave the gears alone?

I think you need a 3.23-3.42 rear gear maximum, and with your RPM at the stripe, rear gear, tire diameter and MPH you have a lot of converter slip.

The car would pick up tremendously IMO with a good 9.5" converter from PTC.

Thanks. 3.42 was my plan. Will require new spool and axles.
I'll look into PTC. Got a contact recommendation there?
Guys also seem to like the Yank Pro series.

I'm sneaking up on this thing. I'm surprised at the power to be honest. A few guys at my track on pump with more boost are 10 mph slower.....

A gear will also help load it a bit more and keep spinning in the first little bit down. Are you on a TH400 ron?
