I used to have a Gen 3 aluminum 5.3L engine. I found this picture, but I don't have any measurements.

I'm sure you can jug a 5.3 aluminum block like a LS1, 4.125 bore or whatever, but I wonder how strong it would still be? Probably depends on the year of the block.

That is where all the blocks I have heard of failing have failed. I thought about welding up deck some around those areas.

Same here, all the ones I've heard of failing and now seen personally have failed in that same location.

I would think that with deck plugs or welding as you mentioned, you could easily beef that area up with good support and possibly be fairly reliable with some serious cylinder pressure.

there is a local va shop that sleeves the alum blocks and claims that they will take 1500 hp which is beyond what I need

I'm going to try a 3.82 bore 4.3 iron block with a stock crank and wiseco pistons with manley rods and see if I can make it work on E85

I don't have the bucks to step up to an aftermarket block but I'd like to hear any feedback you all might have on the LS Next Dart block

its more affordable, but to me it's hard to understand how the old school splayed main caps are stronger than a 6 bolt stock design

the block should be lighter and of course the better windage and flow between the bays

thoughts?

For those who missed it, this is what I was talking about. This is a VQ37 block but the same principals apply in the upper corners of the LS3 blocks. I can't find any pictures of the LS3 block but you get the point.

If you are going to all the trouble to do the above, is it not just worth having something like the ERL superdeck 1 done? That way you know you have stronger liners that are longer also.

The water jacket on the LS3 block is small. You only use 1 at each corner. It's not as difficult or time consuming as you think.

I see a lot of thoughts on liner thickness and failures, but has anyone seen or heard of issues with cap walk or other catastrophic failures using the LS3 blocks? I am thinking about switching over to an LS3 block with a stock stroke on my build but I am worried about the aluminum block strength. Planning on running up to 22 pounds with the S484. Not sure what power numbers that will produce.

Ran across a couple pictures from a Kurt Urban build on Yellow Bullet. Reinforced the block and welded up the ports on the heads:

How are those plugs added? Are they welded into the block or just friction?
