I think your comments are dead on target. At 850 fwhp and above, we use 6 bolt heads to avoid head separation from the block.

Our Dart LS Next aluminum builds have 1/2" head bolts as standard. According to ARP, 1/2" bolts provide 50% more clamping power than 7/16" bolts.
