Cam choice for boost......whos the guru.....?

So who's the guru to go to for a custom cam?

Current cam is in sig.......

Huron Speed V2 T4 A/C kit
390ci iron block
Ported LS1 heads 304cfm@.650 (yes, I'll change them down the road)
Ported LS6 intake
S484 ETR single turbo
10.8:1 cr
Full time E85
4L80E
3.08 rear gears

Hoping for 1,200 RWHP, or more.......100% street car....Roll Races only....50-160mph/180mph

Plenty of people can spec a cam for you! BTR, Martin, tick, Mamo, PatG, Cammotion, Bullet, TSP, Vengeance, Etc

I'd be more worried about keeping an iron block together at 1200rwhp with an auto.

Keeping an iron block together??? I don't understand?

Its stronger than an aluminum block. AES said 1,200 HP is no problem with this engine.

Talk to John from LJMS. He will steer you in the right direction. BTR, from my understanding, uses him for their turbo cam's.

1000rwhp is probably the upper limits with 4 bolt style heads for reliability keeping the gaskets in place. With an auto 1200rwhp is equivalent to about 1400rwhp with an M6.. Plus 70-80ft lbs of torque on the head studs isn't a lot to keep heads in place unless you have the 1/2" setup machined in. Time will tell.

Ive got 1/2" head studs.

I'll get better heads later on with a thicker deck. Or maybe before the kit goes on....

Futral Motorsports make specs some badass cams. Use Cam Motion cores exclusively also. Only shop I use.

AES can say whatever they want. I wouldn't trust them to find me an accessory belt that's the correct length... Much less what they give for a rating on that engine.

I hope it stays together.

There's 5 guys down here with this exact AES 390ci LQ9 engine. Highest is 950 RWHP on boost. Lowest is 700 RWHP on spray. All are going on 3 years without trouble and they race every weekend.

I plan on 18psi with mine. If it pops I'll build an LSx iron engine with Darton sleeves and never buy another engine again.

My old combo was a 370" with LSA heads and stock diameter ARP 2000 studs with LS9 gaskets.

It made over 1050rwhp on the dyno through a glide, 12 bolt and 28" radials and ran 138mph in the eighth at 3275 pounds raceweight.

If the tune is right, and the engine is built well it should stay together IMO.

My tune was a good bit more aggressive than the tune up suggestions you see tossed around on tech as well.

I'd be happy to help the OP out as well with this combo and helping him get a good cam in there. Tony@AES uses me for a lot of their camshafts and knows my cams run well. AES built Anthony Manna's engine and it runs 4.20's@180+ weighing 3200lbs. That's 3000hp easily and more impressive it has cast heads, cast intake and a LSX iron block. No billet block, heads or intake.

doubt a 484 will make 1200 to the ground through a 80e on a 390...

You want that kinda power... better get a GT52/55

Last week it was 1,300 RWHP...

Yo, jerk-off. JZ at Forced Inductions told me AT LEAST 1,300 on my set up......I'm no turbo expert, just asking the experts.

So if you want to be a cock all your life....go tell him hes full of shit.

Stay out of my threads if you have nothing worth a fuck to offer....you prick.

Sounded like a lot to me....just what I was told by JZ.

1,000 will make me happy. Thing is I'm limited in turbo choice because I just purchased the Huron Speed T4 single kit. The S484 ETR is the biggest turbo that will supposedly fit.....

LJMSJohn 01-21-2016 08:52 AM

He might have told you that its made 1300 rwhp... and it has... but that wasnt on a 390 inch motor through an 80....

If your combo makes 4 digits at all... you should be happy with it being T4 based.

So with my higher compression of 10.8:1 on E85 already....there's really nothing I can do to make more power...?

370ci would have been better?

^ This X 1000.

When was the engine built if you don't mind me asking?

I dealt with Brian over at AES, honestly one of the most painful experiences as a consumer at any level. Smoke and mirrors pricing, BTR Lifters were legitimately stolen from me, replace with LS7's... then told they "we're the exact same lifter" after my engine was held hostage for well north of a year.

Ended up going with Steve Roden @ Legend Racing in Schaumburg - not far at all away from AES. Needless to say, I'm now a happy client with a fully operational racing engine.

As far as boost camshafts are concerned, I like Brian Tooley & LJMS camshafts ground on the Cam Motion 8620 cores.

Mine went in about 3 years ago.......from memory.

I remember I spoke to Brian a few times and another guy, can't remember. I remember Brian would take a little long to answer some of my emails....but AFTER the engine was shipped and all done. Which is normal for this industry...after a shop/builder is done with you, MOST, not all, but most of them can care less about you because their business is done with you. What I did to assure I wouldn't get screwed in any way...or end up waiting for months for an engine that takes 3 days to put together....I had a friend go by to see exactly what was in stock...in the building, ready to assemble. He took a little tour....LOL... AES had no clue. They had all parts except the Callies crank. I then called Callies myself to ask if they had this crank in stock for this engine. They had the rough unfinished crank in stock. I asked how long until it could be shipped out the door. They said 6 days after it was paid for. So I paid them that day and sure enough it was delivered directly to AES in about a week.

I then PURPOSELY told AES I did not want them to finish the engine....that they were going to leave the heads, intake, oil pump and little things like that to me to have finished. So they basically did the crank, pistons and rods, 1/2" studs, etc..... Then they shipped it to my ""LOCAL"" builder in Ft. Lauderdale to check everything and finish the top end. This is the key...in my opinion....so a person never gets screwed when buying an engine. Have TWO shops look at it. And AES knows the builder they shipped it to...Hi-Flo Technology. So they knew they better build it right and with EXACTLY the parts I paid for. They can't hide different, cheaper parts inside like a lot of dirtbag builders do, and the engine can be visually checked inside.

AES took my payment and the engine was built and shipped in like 5-6 days. My local builder said everything was perfect and what I ordered.

Only reason I didn't use my local builder...he was slammed with some special projects and he said I had to wait a month or more and the price would be about the same as AES. And AES gave me a good price for the 390ci. PLUS...my 427ci in my sig grenaded finally and I was in a rush to get an engine back in it. From the day I paid for that crank, got the AES engine built and shipped, and had it installed in my car....was like a 4-5 week period. Had it tuned and driving in maybe 5 weeks total.

I controlled them. I controlled the build and the time frame it all got done. No reason for anyone to wait more than a couple weeks for an engine of any kind to get built and shipped. Same with my 427ci and my first LSx engine, a 436ci. Those were also built and shipped within a couple weeks.

Like I said, I bought this engine because I personally know a handful of local guys with this EXACT 390ci and they are between 750-1000 RWHP and fine for going on 3 years now. They roll race like crazy men every single weekend at gatherings and probably every day they drive them.

If it pops on me I'll have my local builder, along with RED for the sleeving work, do a nice LSX iron 6 bolt engine. My local builder uses Steve at RED for all of his resleeving. Should be indestructible built like that.

.

You could also sell those heads.... put on some ported LSA/LS3 heads 350cfm and LS3 intake and not really spend much more....

LS3 intake sells for around $200. An LS6 intake will sell in a heartbeat for $350 shipped
LSA heads with rocker arms are about $900-1000shipped... plus machine work.

The power is in the heads..... the reliability is in the bottom end.
