Looking for input on a boosted combo Hey all, im new to the forum and new to the ls world not new to high performance builds. I have decided to do a "streetable" ls turbo build and was looking for input on what exactly is my best bet to build. I have a modest budget and dont want to skimp out on the important things. I want to make power in the 13-1500 range on race gas and 20-25 psi of boost. I will be doing a fuel injected setup. I dont have any parts yet but am ready to start getting them. Any input would be greatly appreciated on what it will take to build this kinda motor. I have been looking at some AFR heads, possibly doing a 408 cubic inch motor. Im thinking i need to be somewhere in the 700 hp range before the boost. What do some of you guys think?
My 427 lsx made 576 on the engine dyno and will make in the 14-1500 rwhp range on the chassis dyno under boost, drives great the street. I think your trying to push a 4 bolt head block way too far IMO. Your going to want a center counterweight crank, really good set of rods too
I have a 427 that made 714 on the engine dyno. My turbos are too small (EFR7670s) for the engine but I'm going to run them anyway. I figure a reliable broad powerband with 1000whp will make for one hell of a fun street car since it will be spending most of it's time in the lower and mid RPM ranges. I'll put bigger turbos on later if I need more HP.
When I mention to others the turbos are too small, many different people have pointed out it is no fun fixing broken stuff all the time especially since I am running a 6 spd in a heavy car.. If I break it, I'll go 4L80E and put some larger turbos on it and make 1300-1500whp. 1000-1100whp seems to be a good stopping point.
I'd go look at some engine builder sites as many have packages and see what is in them. When I was looking for 1500hp short block packages, the common things I saw across the board were:
LSX or DART SHP block
Callies Dragonslayer crank
Callies ultra I or H beam OR Oliver rods
Piston brands were all over the place
As far as turbos, I'm far from an expert (and only using the EFRs because I already had them), I'd contact bullseyepower or forcedinductions or many of the other turbo people. I think you are going to be looking at a 63-66mm wheel but check with them.
