Turbo 5.3 not making the power it should.

Default Turbo 5.3 not making the power it should.

Im having issues getting my 5.3 to make the power I believe it should be. Set up is as follows, stock 5.3 bottom end BTR stage 1 turbo cam and springs, on3 gt42 (74mm) turbo, ls6 intake, truck throttle body, th400 3600 converter, trans brake, 3.42 rear. Holley dominator ecu at 14psi with 14* of timing the car went 10.88@122 with a 1.60 60'. I am thinking at that boost I should be bottom 10's and more mph. Any ideas? The setup is in a 68 camaro full weight car.

I can see maybe with 3.73's or 4.10's rear but 3.23 might be a little to hard to pull.

That doesn't sound surprising at all. It's a fairly stock engine making probably around 500 to the wheels. Heavy as hell sounds about right.

I was actually wondering the same maybe gears are just not letting it make the power.

I guess I was swinging for the fence on this one haha. Figured maybe someone who had a similar build may be able to shed some light. My biggest thing is mph I'm seeing 5.3 turbo cars trap 130+.

Yeah but are they full weight steel cars? Most tend to use a more aggressive cam and bigger/better turbos.

What heads? You have to remember when you measure boost you are measuring restriction. If you have crappy heads you can make 20lbs of boost and still not make as much power with better heads at 10lbs.

3200lbs is pretty light for a stock bodied car and yes that is from the factory. My little S10 weighs in at 3900 and most newer cars are pigs compared to the old stuff.

Heads are 862's and I could'nt get the log to upload, I dont have the 10.88 log it started recording during burnout and ran out before pass was over. I do have a 11.0 log 1.8 60' tho. I could email it to you? afr 11.5 on pump 93

I'd be shocked to see a 69 Camaro that's all there weigh under 3200. They're not as light as you think. Either way, how much boost were you leaving on? What kind of converter is in it? What's the boost curve like? The speed pretty much goes with the et. So it seems that's what it's gonna be unless there's an issue.

need to know a little more .

what turbine and housing is on that turbo.

what intercooler

the log might show how that converter works .

my nova weighs 3400 without me in it. all steel with a glide and 10 bolt.

Wouldn't surprise me if the car weighed 36-3700 with you in it, @ 122 you are prob a little over 500 RWHP-how much speed did it pick up after the 1/8
Logging would be good, esp to see if you are at 100% throttle.

Mine ran 11.20 @120 in cutlass that weighs 3621 with me in it on 9 lbs @ 15* with 7665 on3

Leaving on 5psi ramped in to 14psi by 2 seconds, gained 23mph from 1/8 to 1/4. Tried increasing timing that slowed it down so I went back. Turbo info is exhaust side 81.8mm inducer 75.4 exducer 3" eBay intercooler. I would guess weight 3500-3600 with me in it. I'm 200lbs

Yup weight is probly 3600 with u in car. For that boost and turbo and ramping boost from 5-14 in 2 sec. that time is about accurate. With a good 60 ft and not ramping boost so slow u may get it to 10.5 at that boost level. Pretty mild setup that your expecting more from. Mph may be a little low but I think it's not far off

I've been helping Jimmy with this car really helping with Holley. I bet car is 3500 with him in it. Only thing I can think is turbo may be hurting him. We have buddy with similar setup but twins and he trapped 131 around 15psi. Here is turbo link on the car
