New cam for LSA blower
 
Hey guys, I posted this in Internal engine as well but thought i might get more of a response here.

I am going to be doing a crank pulley swap on my car in the not to distant future and while I was in there I thought I would go ahead and change the cam as well. Car is a 99 Camaro A4, stock bottom end LS1 with a set of PRC 243 stage 2 heads, 228R cam topped with the LSA blower @ 11psi and meth injection.
The car runs well but I am trying to get back to a more stock like feel, mainly idle quality and low speed manners. Getting the valve train quieter at the same time would also be nice. Car currently has a 4l60 with a yank 3600 stall. Will be doing a 4l80 swap at some point as well and will be doing a converter that will compliment this setup at that time. Any ideas or suggestions on the cam is appreciated.

LS9 Cam for the win, Makes decent power, Idles great and only cost about $125-$150 new.

I run the same cam on my LSA supercharged LY6 6.0 with TR6060 and it's very easy to drive and has a mellow idle, Only slightly more aggressive than a stock LS3 camshaft.

yeah i definitely love the price of that cam for sure. I wonder what the power difference would be between the two on an ls1?

What are the specs on the cam you have now? Was it made for your combination?

Instead of the extra weight of the 4l80 and modifications required, mechanical and electrical, I would opt for the Performabuilt Black Edition 4l60e with close ratio gears instead. With your LSA blower that would make a nice combination for drive-ability.

Don't know if it's a combination of cam,lifters, rockers, and pushrods, but the TSP roller rockers with trunion upgrade really made a difference in drive train noise on my TSP LQ9 370 compared to previously installed YellaTerra roller rockers on the LS1. Still can't get over how much quieter the drive train is.

pretty sure its 228/228 .588 112lsa

I got it when i went heads cam. Just left it in while i did the blower install.

Note: This cam does NOT have the rear reluctor ring for the older applications with the cam sensor located at the back of the block. This will require the conversion to the LS2 design timing cover and timing set with the cam sensor located in the front cover.

I have a Yank py3400 blower converter with 3.23 gears. Much tighter and better in city driving than previously installed Precision Industries 3600 (Vigilante) stall. It was too loose but with 3.73 gears. Gears IMO make a difference too when selecting a TQ.

I have been thinking about sticking my stock cam back in as well. That will be about as budget friendly as it gets but i just dont want to be very underwelmed off boost.. however if i do that then i could do a different size balancer and up the boost a little more to make up for it.?

Been looking at the lpe gt2-3 which seems to be very popular with the trucks. Anyone had experience with this cam?

Would i have to change pushrods from what i am using now if just the cam changes? I did my heads cam setup back in 2011 and dont remember the length off hand other than they were shorter than stock with the milled heads and thinner head gasket.

Actually a milder cam should bring the torque in sooner and make more lower in the RPM range. It can also bring the boost on slightly faster (motor will spin the blower faster/sooner) but will likely hurt the top end slightly. The area a cam works can be looked at as a sliding scale, If you want top end power you typically are sacrificing low end torque and the same applies if you get a milder cam that works in a lower range. You'll pick up torque down low but power will peak sooner and the top end suffers to an extent. For a street driven car a big cam is not always better because as you found they can make more peak power but aren't so much fun trying to use the car as daily driver. I will also add that I'm not a cam guru by any means but a roots blower specific grind will help it make more power where the supercharger is most efficient and in the case of a roots it's under well under redline.
As far as the pushrods go you'll need to check once you get the cam.

If you don’t mind spending the money on a new aftermarket cam get Pat Guerra to spec you one for $25. Give him real feedback via spec sheet on what kind of driving you want, VVT or nor, AFM, etc and he’ll design one that TSP or somebody else can make. Cost is the same as one of their ready made cams. Super happy with mine.

well the biggest thing is you have to be willing to cut on the car. If you want to send me a pm i can help you with the parts. Too many to list here.

Hawks Motor Sports sells a kit to modify the cowl and still maintain your wipers. Don't know if enough clearance though for this setup.
