Ring gap on stock 5.3

im just curious on what people are gapping their rings for a boosted 5.3, I have a cam and springs for this motor and other than that it’s stock (sloppy mechanic stage 2 cam and pack 1218 springs) . Just wanting to do a little to this motor while I build a motor. Thanks I’m advance!

How much boost? Also check the OE gap, I have read countless threads about this and many say the gap for stock is like 26/28 which will be fine for around ~16 psi

Right now I’m at 9-10 pounds but I’m installing a boost controller this weekend and gonna do 15 pounds max for this motor anyway

I'm doing roughly the same build as you and left the stock ring and gap.

My experience so far stock gap 2006 4.8 top .018 bottom .024 , 2008 5.3 top 0.24 bottom .026 , 2003 6.0 top .020 bottom .026. So it was different for all of them , I would check them and open them up .026-.28 if you plan to push 600-700 whp.

Most higher milage motors already have a almost perfect ring gap for boost. Usually around .026-.030

28/30 for 40psi on a 5.3 is no problem.

Gap your rings kids
What happens when you don’t gap your rings and boost a stock ls1 to 16 pounds on a highway pull. All 8 looked like this...

Nothing happened btw. Car stalled, didn’t lockup or anything. Just massive blow by. I popped in the clutch and coasted to the nearest off ramp.

When I pulled the heads off the bottom end appeared fine. Tops of the pistons were intact and the cylinder walls looked pristine. It wasn’t until I pulled the oil pan that I saw the carnage.

When u gap the rings do u recondition the rods or just put the same bearings back in. My concern is the egg shape that can form on high mileage engines.

that aint ring gap causing rings to bind up.....

that's det. rattle so hard the ring lands get blown off.

that's impressive! would love to see some IAT, AFR and timing data and know what fuel
