I tigged the axle to the center section, 309L rod is my preference. preheat by setting it atop my woodstove and getting a rager going. I put the weld in 1" at a time skipping around the tube like I was tightening lug nuts. thats my go-to technique for welding any steel to cast iron

but, I know people just go at it with the mig no preheat just .035 hard wire burning in as hot as possible and I never hear of failures so pick the one you're most comfy with i guess

To me it wouldn't be so much about failure, as warping/twisting the rear out of square, causing pre-mature wear on bearings at best case. I 100% agree with your method, and a slow cooling process can't hurt either.

Agreed. When I young and didn’t know any better, I mig’d my 12 bolt tubes in a circle. A couple years ago I replaced the ends with big Ford 9” with a line up bar. They were 1/4” out on each side. So, always stick!

I've done a few 8.8 swaps for customers now and all of them have been out of alignment minimum 1/4" and I have to throw a come along on it to even get the bar in

All have been very straight when they leave but I'd like to see one after a couple seasons of launching on sticky tires

Where did you get your truing bar? I'd like to get one but they were pretty pricy.

I snagged it from a scrap pile! I should have taken more but I didn't wanna be greedy. The school I got my AS in machining was donated like 40 sticks of TGP rod...which nobody could use since it was already hardened...so they scrapped it all

so I know it's not car stuff, but I just moved to new digs and I'm readying my workshop

take a look at my erection

the roof in my shop has a weird semi-cathedral construction...it has a ridge beam and rafter main support, but also has battens and ties....well it must have bowed at some point and the PO put a vertical post in the middle of the beam. That ate up a bunch of room so I added a joist and a couple slip block diagonals
like so

other side, added that light fixture too

then with the vertical gone I could perform my penetration

8" double wall stainless rockwool packed chimney pipe thru the roof, normal stove pipe to that

2' above the highest point of the roof, with a vacuum type cap so I dont get fucked by high winds out of the Columbia River Gorge

I have a wood stove besides the forced air oil furnace (free firewood, offsets price of oil, lol) and the
wind can cause problems. Need to look into that type cap. I def cant use it if painting, dam fan sucks
it back down the chim. no matter how much venting I do, and its in a diff section.
The things we have to do for winter builds, lol.

Doug I missed it, is the turbo billet? I'm betting it is. I have been eyeballing them hard lately so I can't wait to see what it can do for you. And you're right he is damn near giving them away.

nah it's the cast 75mm compressor wheel, with the small turbine. I'm hoping it does well with the 4.8, loosey goosey converter and 3.73's

i got so much work to do on my garage and shop first, then a couple large scale paying gigs...i'll be surprised if this thing fires by may

I can say for sure though the billet s480 with the 96mm turbine is incredibly powerful for the money. less than a dollar per horsepower in my experience

I think I'm gonna do the same, cast s475 small wheel. I think it'll be plenty to get me in the low 6s 1/8 mile. Should be loads better than my current clapped out on3 7665, which runs pretty good really lol

short update.

been steady collecting parts. bought a used holley (BARFFF) turbo log to save time since I seem to be short of that lately. 10 pt cage from some roundy round parts house. manual master cylinder kit. found a clean dash pad for a hundred bucks.

turns out the "built 355" is a smogger 305...listed it for 500 engine and trans with all the gaudy edelbrock crap on it on the trailerpark of the internet...craigslist. we'll see if the tire kickers come thru.

got almost all the wiring done for the garage and shop. wow 6/3 wire is ****** expensive. hopefully that's buttoned up soon so I have have my zappers back in action.

currently trying to get this miata NB rebuild done asap since dude's first race is march 1st
