Default Air Filters with 700+ WHP

Hey guys, lets talk air filters.

I've done a weeks worth of reading and searching this forum and google about air filters for higher horsepower motors. Currently my car made 780whp on 93 but was running out of injector so we backed it down to 750. Got some 120lb injectors vs the 80lbs and some duel 350 walbros vs the duel 250s shooting to break 800 this summer. I had one of those expensive mushroom filters on the car at the dyno because of space constraints and it messed with literally everything. Boost controller wasn't functioning correctly, WG would not correspond to just spring pressure and boost in general was all over the place. We pulled that filter off and boom, everything started working how it should. Its driven on the street a lot and in Vermont there's dust and dirt roads as well. I have the Turbo-Guard screen over it now to try and help but I'd like to run an actual filter. I found a "cobra head" style 90 that may still flow alright to allow an actual filter.

Most of the posts I'd read where quite a bit older and never really had good data, so I was just curious if anyone has run some different filters on the dyno to see what's actually working with higher HP numbers. If I lose 20hp or so to save the turbo/motor I'm willing to make that sacrifice being its mostly a street car. When I called K&N they told me to multiply my crank HP by 1.67 to give me the CFM I need from a filter. Just for safety sake I used 1000hp x 1.67 = 1670CFM. They did give me a couple part numbers of filters with 4" inlets that flowed 1600cfm but idk how accurate they actually are.

Im interested in this as well. Ive done a bunch of research on low profile filters and havent found anything good.
I found this one but theres not much info of it actually being run on a boosted setup.

I don't know how helpful this will be as I haven't tried to dyno my car with the filters off, but i'm running a pair of R2C CO10541b filters on my BW S362's on a 6.0. Numbers in sig, so I think they flow pretty decent and aren't huge with an overall length of 6.25".

Though in your defense, you get to run two of them at that power though. Which certainly helps the car breath.

There's a great episode of engine masters where they test a whole bunch of different air filters with some interesting results. Season 2, Episode 27.

Yeah I've seen that! But it was all the round style filters for a carb or snyper style intake. I haven't really found anything good on a cone/round style filter.

****, no, sorry, there is that one, but the one I actually meant was season 6, episode 99, the one about "cold air intakes", that one is all about the cone style filters.

It also seems they aren't doing well business wise? They show up unavailable on summit racing and the little I just read people have had a hard time getting their filters.

Ohhh I'll look this one up! Was it boosted? Or an NA motor? Because its the higher CFM that I'm after to keep up with the turbo.

just looked at it, it's a NA Blueprint 6.2, 550/500. Also, Brule has a *commanding* mullet in this episode.

I’m in that range, but have two filters, which cuts the flow in half of course. I’m also wondering about your fuel statements, I use 80lb and 450lph pump without issue. Might be something else going on.

800 on E85 or pump? We even cheated the regulator up to 60psi. But it was definitely running out of fuel somehow. You can even watch the exhaust turn red on that pull haha.

Well for those HP numbers that is pretty surprising. I'd love to see them do one again with a blown or turbo motor. But thats reassuring.

Engine masters Season 3 episode 34. They were using I believe was the airaid brand. They tested 4 including a cone mesh which I plan on trying also.

Its fallen off before, at the track, and not made any difference in power, lol.

Never been on dyno, but just shy of 4200#, and been 9.32@147, so I'd guess it's over 700whp.

ITG makes some trick ones for high performance motors, the sell over-socks for them as well.

Used on sprints and midgets, on dirt. Never had anything get past them. They also have some pretty trick air intakes to go with.

That was a great episode! Too bad they didnt do that with going to smaller size filters to see when they start making a difference!
