Default 799 Heads

Any problems with the 799 heads and boost? I've heard they had casting flaws and I've heard the casting is just a rougher finish. Got a buddy building a NA 6.0 and he is wanting my 862 heads for compression, I figured since the 799 heads had 2 in valves it'd be a pretty good swap but I just didn't want to end up with a pair of junk heads. I know port wise they are the same as 243"s.

So the castings being cast different doesn't affect the strength of the heads? I can port my 862 heads and install 2 in valves, I was just going to swap heads with him and give him the valves to help him pick up some compression NA, I just don't want to end up with a set of heads that are prone to crack under boost.

There are just a different casting process other wise a 799 is identical to a 243. Like the 862 is similar to a 706 casting they both use a different casting process.

The 799 didn't have any issues.

The 799 is sought after and sold for $400+ a set. Where as you can pick up the 706's for well under $100. Better off IMO to sell 799's and work a set of the smaller CC heads. IN the end you'll have the same $ invested and a much better head. Or leave the 706's as is depending on power goals and pocket the rest. Honestly if oyu want more than 900ish crank you are better off with a thick deck aftermarket head. The factory head decks warp after awhile at high power levels. Not much you can do about that.

There were 2 different versions of both the 799/243 heads, even though they are the same casting with a different number. The older 243/799 heads were a sand cast, the 07+ mostly became a SPM casting. The SPM heads have a smoother finish to them, and have what's described as a "triangle" cast into the bottom edge near where the lower head bolts are.
Both head castings are good with boost, I don't know of any actual issues with any 243/799 heads. Some of the old 862 heads that were poured by castech had some issues, but that's literally the only ones I'm aware of, and those were from 2000 I believe.
