Default Atk-408

anyone have any experience with the ATK-408 short blocks? I'm looking at the sp26-b and seems like a good deal for the money. I would be using a set of ls3 heads and a summit stage 4 turbo cam, holley intake with a shearer A2W and a pair of borg s363's.

I was in the same market.

ATKs reviews are still terrible all across the net with dissatisfied customers. While I am sure they ship out some good units I believe heavily in review processes and how a company handles them. They dug themselves a large hole IMO.

There are even some bad reviews from within Summit Racing for ATK. Summit is a distributor of ATK.

I ended up buying a 408 short block from a much smaller company called AMS racing. The price was better by a good bit and they will build it however you like.

That being said I don't have it in my possession so their quality remains to be seen. Their reviews are very good though in comparison.

AMS is on EBay, right? I think I was looking at them for a little while. I think I posted on here asking people if they ever heard of them.

I’ll be interested to hear what your impression is.

Thompson, ams, and atk are the three cheapest companies for shortblocks. I dont have any experience with any of them but ive heard atk’s reputation is really bad.

Stay away from Thompson, three different people local to me have used them, will never use them again and actively warn others not to as well.

I would avoid ATK personally as well. I got my lsnext short block from CNC motorsports and while I did have one minor issue with it (they missed a small oil hole plug in the lifter valley area that led to low oil pressure on start up) I got it fixed and it's been rock solid for me since. I would probably use them again and they're more on the budget end of things too. They're worth checking out for sure.

I recently had an engine built by AMS (Gen 4 forged 370CI iron block). The process was pretty much seamless from the ordering online, talking about the build over the phone, to receiving it at my shop. Will be installing it in a Procharged C6 soon and will report back to this thread if I can remember. So far, impressed with them.

Well this obviously helps reassure my decision making process lol. This kind of **** is stressful to me and many others I'm sure.

What was the turnaround time for you? I am looking at 4-6 weeks. I am hoping for the sooner as I'd like to get my car back on the road but beggars can't be choosers.

Yes they do have an Ebay store. I didn't buy through there though as I would have had to pay like 450 bucks in state sales tax. Buying direct got rid of that.

No doubt, I ordered it May 18th and received it June 15th. I opt'd for them to deburr the block as well. This was a basic short block build with an Eagle rotating assembly/ARP main studs/ rings gapped for 20 psi.

Build times will vary depending on what crank you decide to go with I'm sure.

Thanks for the good info LaBLK. I ordered on 6/13 We shall see. Eagle Crank and H beam rods. I told them whatever piston they wanted to be around 9.5:1

We also agreed on gap rings for 20psi even though I'll likely never be that high anytime soon.

At least you are close to them it appears. I gotta a 500.00 bill to get it trucked to Washington.

Yeah man, freight is definitely pricey these days. It was $278 to business or over $500 to residential. I just loaded into the trunk of my daily from the shop lol.

One gent had a rod/piston 370 built for a single 7875 build and it kept wiping the bearings out in it, sent it back to thompson, was told nothing was wrong, that the install was to blame, thompson sent it back with new bearings, happened again, sent it to a local builder, rotator wasn't balanced or something, they fixed it, no more issues.
Another bought a short block and paid for diamond pistons and clevite coated bearings, got probe pistons and standard king bearings, thompson offered no help.
Another had a six bolt 388 built, big turbo combo, lost oil pressure on the dyno, wiped out the bearings in the bottom end, clearances were all over the map, had it rebuilt locally, no more issues.
This was several years ago.

Just a quick update for AMS racing. Got a phone call on the morning of 7/8 after ordering short block on 6/13 saying my engine was ready to go. Shipping was a couple hundred more than I was hoping for but unfortunately it is what it is. Shipping company picked it up and had it on the road that afternoon. Pretty excited to see what this thing looks like in person!

Shipping is just like that right now, its very dynamic and nobody is holding to rates because of fluctuation.
Great to hear your engine is on the way, can you do an unboxing so everyone can see what they get when ordering from AMS?

$4909 shipped, not including taxes. They gave me a deal on the Gen4 block upgrade, deburring and drilling and tapping a hole I needed for the Procharger kit.
