Turbo LQ4 time!
If anyone has seen my activities iver the past year, i recently swapped a 4l80 in, 411 pcm with 3 bar boost setting, and did swap some updated valvetrane for a Summit stage 2 turbo cam.
Well, i messed up and pushed water into one of the combustion chambers and after sitting a while, I busted a rod apparently. At first I thought I just had a leaking head gasket and was running fine, but after a long sit, it filled up with water and busted the rod. fortunately it was only for a second so damage was minimal but what's done I'd done.
a little water and that chamber was full!
before finding out that i had more than some head studs to torque
at least its clean
can you tell which one gave up? what caught my eye first was the kissed piston. then i went to clean the piston and i moved it by hand into the bore.... yep, thats done.
so, fortunately, I have a LQ4 I was gonna use for boost specific build anyway. well, now it's gonna actually go in it.
LQ4 with 4th gen rods, ls2 pistons, stock crank currently, but might consider forged rotating assembly, but I already have everything to build this engine, and just have to swap over the ls1 upgrades including the cam. the 6.0L will also get the bigger 7875 gen 2 turbo over the gt45 that is on it currently.
heres when i was initially just putting it together. have to put the cam back i it, as its currently in the hurt LS.
dual 340 racetronic pumps with dual hotwire kit, feeding deka 80lbs injectors, and full fuel return.
so.... yeah... engine swap time, and yet... another hptuning session. this car is starting to **** me off lol at least with the heads off, pulling the trans bolts will be easier.
while Im in there, anyone with any recommendations, please let's hear it.
You'll love the upgrade to the better Gen 2 7875 turbo as well, a friend of mine made the same change and the car picked up a ton of power.
3" collector with Vband. much cleaner primary. as much as i like the equal length on the cxracing manifoldss, they just get in the way of everthing.
Save your money, look to make the move to a T6 turbo setup down the road as that will take a significant amount of modification, then upgrade the rotating assembly, that's what I'd do anyway.
Ballhoned the glaze off the lq4 for fresh rings, and cleaned up the deck surface. one more cleaning before sticking the crank and pistons back in. The walls were mirror finished before, now they have a nice crosshatched finish for some fresh rings. I was going to throw the stock rings in it, but I think I over happen them a tad, so I got some new ones and a ring filer to do this a bit more correct.
240 flexhone brand new out of the box. For a bunch of stock parts coming back together, this will do just fine. just look at those mirror walls, let's scuff em up!!! 😆
using atf for the lubricating cutting oil. not as messy as I thought it would be. don't get me wrong, it still needs a catch pan under the block lol
not too bad for my first time. 20 passes up and down inside at moderate speed at a constant pace and kept turning it on the way out to keep it uniform, and ran it on the way in.
As you can see the glossy surface before the flexhone.
that will do flexhone lol
after doing a set of 4 at a time. i would splash fresh oil on the hone before each cylinder. then clean them all out, then fresh atf to keep it lubericated until i stuff pistons in it with assembly lube later. then I did the other bank.
not a bad crosshatch for a first timer. again, im just deglazing it. as you can see at the bottom slightly, it almost took all the carbon build up out where the pistons dont really touch the bottom of the cyclinder wall. not boring here, just cleaning up the walls for fresh piston rings with proper turbo gap.
might as well with the price cut for the holidays
the holly sniper 92mm i was wrestling with getting it or not. ill be running an adaptor with the ls6 intake... yes i know the ls6 opening is smaller and wont benefit really flowwise, but i want to get something that will look cleaner than this ebay 80mm chunk of metal i got on the nose of the intake, and im pretty sure its messing with my tuning too. the holly sniper gets rid of the coolant tubes too, and if i feel froggy later, lets me run a spicier intake later.
