Default Popped #7 ringland

Did a WOT pull on the highway 5 min before I got home and car after felt like it had a miss/dead cylinder. Car only makes 5-7psi 5.3 with a VS billet 70/70 on 87 pump gas (stock shortblock, 862 heads with light cleanup). I do spray wiper fluid on HP pump with #2 snow nozzle for backup and the car has a good FMIC. Anyways, I thought it was spark but they all checked out at the coil side, car idled fine but sounds slightly off. Used a heat gun to find #7 was running 400*F cooler than the others on the driver side. Pulled the plug and something pushed the strap down closing it. I did a leakdown on #7 and found higher leakage so I put a camera in the hole. I also didn't see it as I think its in the upper left of the cylinder but the engine still turns over by hand fully to TDC and back down. Valves still seem to open and close and its smooth. I decided to start tearing it apart and started after the turbo to see if the piston piece made its way through to destroy the exhaust wheel and the 200cell cat. I only got the cat off and the turbo manifold/turbo off and I haven't found anything yet. Either its stuck in the crossover or maybe it made its way out the 60mm WG and shot out the exhaust.

I'm assuming this is ring gap butting up and popping the ring land right? I will eventually tear this down and likely will just slap in a new piston/rod and hone if I don't find anything too crazy in the walls or the head.

You can see the exhaust valve opening in this one.

People have run more than double and almost triple that amount of boost on a totally stock bottom end and not broken a ringland, that is detonation/heat related for sure. 87 octane has no place in a turbo setup, especially with a Holley controlling timing as their knock control is mediocre even when setup properly and most of the times it's not.

I agree, I have another car thats the same (150k motor) been running 13-15psi no problem on untouched short block. I don't see any other signs of detonation though. I also had the motor apart like less than 500 miles ago to do headgaskets and it looked brand new. I've been running 87 on this for 2 years with boost. Factory compression LM7 with low boost and reduced timing, FMIC and a smidge of water/meth should be fine. Most don't even intercool up to 5psi or reduce timing.

May have missed it, but how much timing are you running? I had mine pop in almost the exact same spot, and I've leaned on the engine a lot harder than what I had when it popped.

May I ask what the ring gaps were? ie: Did you open them?

There was another guy on here seeing what he could get away with on 87 octane, pretty sure it ended up the same way.
I'd be spraying 100% meth if attempting something like what you're doing.
With a small nozzle I'd imagine a 2 gallon tank would really far.
