Theres a thought. Expensive though.
There are car transmissions that use that method. CVT- Continually variable transmission. Where drive is transmitted via a steel belt from 2 pulleys that vary in diameter.
Idea is, that the engine can be maintained at maximum power/torque, yet and the car accelerates by varying the gearing.
