Default FI w/ Stock A4

How long will it hold up? How hard is FI, either turbo or super, on the tranny? Besides stall/cooler, I really don't want to touch the tranny.

Very little chance it will hold up long. Even built its on the edge. Check all the FI sigs., a lot of TH400-350's. Mine simply could not handle the power at first (acting very erratically) so I put in the Trango shift kit. It felt great after that but then on a 1-2 shift it blew the band apply piston out the side of the case taking part of the case with it.

No A4 will hold up to boost. I tried everything. If you dont want to blow up trannies every month then dont go FI. You'll be better off with a progressive NOS kit.

As others have said, it's really just a matter of time. However, I think the time until it bites it is HIGHLY dependent upon the driver and how he/she treats the vehicle.

If someone only drives around the city under 40 MPH 99% of the time then the tranny will last a very long time assumin they're not goin to redline from redlight to redlight.

If your car is a highway car but you never do full throttle accelerations, etc then it'll last a very long time.

The more you abuse the stock tranny or beefed one the less it will last.

13 passes on my Rock On A4.....I think there are a bunch of S&%t builders. I'll see how mine holds as it's a pretty good test of Daves tranny...3800lb raceweight...3.23 gears and et drags.

I have had my stock tranny on my blower setup for 3,000 miles now and knock on wood no problems yet, i do have a transgo shift kit too.

I don't rag on my car all my time so I know i have a ticking time bomb. I'd like to install a built tranny before the stocker lets go so I don't experience any inconvenience.

like others have said you can't beat a T -350 or T-400 but you sacrifice your overdrive.

4 years on my with FI(2 different s/c set ups too) on my stock A4 here, no shift kit, 3800 stall, 3.73s and 60fts in the 1.60-70 range most the time, and its driven everywhere, highway, city and Drag strip. It keeps begging for more. It was banging the 1-2 and 2-3 but that was a simple fix in the LS1edit file....to bad I had to fix it, not the "tuner"
Would I buy a built tranny if I was starting from scratch? Hell yeah, but mine is still working for me and so is the stock 10bolt

Lots of thinks can contribute to the early demise of a 4L60E, but usually it's heat and rpms. I'd run a big trans cooler and no more than a 4000 stall, actually a 3200 if you really cannot afford to fix it anytime soon. I would keep the rpms down too.

Two years on Nitrous, stock tranny finally dies when I started spraying through the shifts. Now with FI, I am running a FLP tranny. So far no problems.

Added 8 lb S/C and a big (3800 ish) stall and tranny crapped almost immediately (wouldn't shift under power). Heavy duty rebuild blew up in about 30 days (professional job). My own rebuild now in for 6 months and about 50 trips down the 1/4 mile. Fingers still crossed!

I ran FI for 1.5 years on a stock tranny (increased line pessure, no cooler, stock conveter) and it was fine with no problems. However, I had it built locally last year since I was doing a converter and going to more boost, and the stock 2-3 band looked like a desert floor with the amount of cracks in it

So far, it's been almost a year since the rebuilt, and this tranny has been taking 500+rwhp/rwtq without any problems.

Everyone is gonna have a different experience. Mine's good, and yes, I spent the money to have my 4L60E rebuilt. I like my overdrive

I have a Century built 4L60E, it had run 10.9s- 11.1s na before I did the Vortech. It was refreshed last year by Century and has been working great, before that and since. I`ve had this tranny for 4 years, it has at least 400 passes on it and about 25,000 miles. I talked to Ronnie at Century, he builds all their race trannys. He told me they have 4 cars w/4L60s running low 9s at 140mph+. He said I should be ok up to 750 rwtq with my setup(all the newest upgrades). He also said it was ok to run the car into 4th, and said the 3-4 clutch pack and the servo are very strong. I only got 6 runs on my new setup(last weekend before tracks closed) but it shifts real fast and seems good.

Thanks for the input! Pretty much came to the conclusion that if I do go FI that my tranny will have to be upgraded at the same time no matter how I drive it.

If you drive your car normally and get it on it only every now n then you should be fine.

I think your tranny has a better chance of surviving by loading it up (power braking) at the line instead of flashing it.

Also if you do a lot of downshifting under full throttle that burns up the clutches and bands faster.

The car would never see the strip, just a daily driver kind of cruiser. That is good news then.

Destroyed mine 3 times........ I was SOOOOO tired of the car always being down from a broke Tranny and i LOVE driving my car.... so instead of going Th-350/400 im swaping over to a 6 speed....... Track times arent that important to me anymore..... she will go a few times to see what she does but after that im just going to do with the car what i bought it for..... DRIVE IT... I dont care what anyone says the 4L60E is a POS.

no doubt its weak and if your car is a driver I gotta agree a 6 speed would make it very fun.

I love my 6-Speed... 4L60E's just aren't built for a lot of power.
