Default Eagle Rods in a turbo setup?

My goal was to start off real low at 500rwhp or so for pump gas, but in the future I'd like to be able to crank it up to 800rwhp or so.. possibly as high as 900rwhp.. but very unlikely, as my budget does not include enough cash to support the types of money that need to be poured into this project.

Currently this is what I am supposed to be doing:

Prepped Stock Crank
Eagle H-Beam Rods w/ upgraded rod bolts
Thermal Coated Diamond Pistons
ARP Main Studs
ARP Head Studs

Somebody has told me that the rods would not be good for the power level I'm hoping to max out at when I run for maximum ET at the track. I am under the impression that RPM is what kills rods, and that the rods are definately stronger than stock.. and should hold up for that power level for my application assuming it doesn't receive abnormal abuse and the tune is kept under control. For the most part it will be a weekend driven pump gas low rwhp application for most of the time.. however.. when an event like thunder comes I'd like to try and pump it up to 800-900rwhp.. and definately want it to last 100-200+passes.

I definately don't want to budget in $1200+ for rods. So if it won't handle it, I'll be pushing the power level back.. and coping with less power.. or possibly pushing parts to their limits to see what they can take.

Thanks,
Josh

You can get a great set of rods for much less than 1200, think 700 dollar range, lunati makes some nice ones.

Are the Pro Mods really that much stronger than the upgraded Eagle H-beam rods?

Thanks,
Josh

Eagle rods in your application are easily good for 1000+ hp.

If you ask almost any real engine builder Eagle rods are good to well beyond their "rated" HP level. There are a lot of people running them in the 700+ hp range with no problems what so ever, however if you have the money step it up and buy some beefier rods. Another option to look at is the used NASCAR rods. Yes they are used, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Carrillo rod with the CARR bolts after one of those races (at least nothing that a little LS1 will be able to break). You can pick those up in various sizes (not just the honda/quad4/etc. rod journal size) for $500 all day long.

Yeah.. FM had suggested Eagle H beams, but I had only told them my goals with the original turbo kit (500rwhp), not with the engine holding more.. so that I could upgrade later.. I'll definately call them.. but I also wanted to hear some results from folks who have actually ran the rods in a turbo application.. thanks for your responses guys! What kind of treatment is available that is worth the money.. cryo, etc?

Thanks,
Josh

And for what its worth, I was going to run Eagle H-Beams in my 1000hp turbo motor until plans changed. I would definately upgrade the bolts though.

Rods are always rated at less then they will handle. For instance my crower billets are only rated at 800 hp I think, Yet they have proven to be one of the strongest rods in the world!! 1800+hp!

DO not buy used Nascar rods! I bought a set once, They were from one of Dale earnhardts races, and had them sent right to Carrillo for there "free" inspection and they told me they were junk! Both ends were elongated and the rods were stretched. lUCKILY THEY RETURNED MY MONEY, I asked for another set, but they said they would all be inentical! I guess spinning 9500 rpm for 500 miles will do that! For a low doller street motor maybe, but I would'nt put them into anything you have alot invested in.

We have bought several sets of used Carrillos and sent them to Carrillo for bushing work and inspection. Each set we received aere in great shape and have been in motors for 1-3 years. No issues on track car or daily drivers. We bought from Childress and were told they were "dyno" use rods.
These are in a forged 382, a sleeved 418 and a sleeved 427.
