Default Turbo Header Principals?

Quick question about fabing up tubular headers for manifolds. I've noticed that John from Phamspeed likes to keep everything as close to equal length as possible. Also noticed ltls96ss (I think that's the right guy, sorry if it isn't I know I just sent you a PM) the guy that posted pics of his current twin build up doesn't have equal length headers. Are there any reasons why this proves to be a good way to do things vs. a bad way? Obviously space is a constraint so let's keep that in play. Also, what about step headers? (And that's where the primaries change size correct?? I'm assuming to help scavaging?) Anywho...it's out there...if you can explain it thanks.

Well I believe the fastest turbo LS1 was runing unequal length turbo manifolds before he sold his kit. It went 8.29 at 167 if memory serves and had a best mph of 170.5mph on another pass.

I'm sure equal length might help in some areas, but the above is a good example of what can be done with unequal length.

I think equal length is optimal, but almost impossible in a turbo application....Just doesn't look like enough room to equal them all out

Equal length headers only realize benefits when exhaust scavenging is critical, like N/A, N20 and blower apps, where there is no obstruction to exhaust and the tubes can "time" pulses to help evacuate the next cylinder in the firing order. That all goes out the window when there is a turbine obstructing the exhaust flow. Exhaust pulses are working on the turbine rather than pulling the exhaust from the next cylinder. Unequal is just fine in a turbo application.
