turbo cam questions

Default turbo cam questions

alright guys, the time has come for me to choose my cam. i know that there are alot of choices, but i was just curious... what sort of cam should i look for on an otherwise stock shortblock? i was looking at a few LPE cams, and noticed this one, the GT7- 208/230 .554/.546 121CL and i look at the huge amount of exhaust duration compared to a small intake duration, but then i look at Futral's F7 224"/230" .588"/.595" 114LSA , which has the same exhaust duration but alot largr intake duration. what should i be looking for? is there a certain amount of exhaust duration i want in order to help spooling? keep in mind that i'll be on a stock shortblock, and i want to use an aftermarket cam because i really dont wanna put the stock one back in, and i have to change it anyway.

ps- i know i should call a sponsor, and eventually i will.

the gt-7 is lingenfelter's turbo cam. they use it in all of their turbo engine packages. John alwasys said that the opening and closing points of the valves would dictate the duration and lobe sep. and we all know John was a pretty smart fellow. ever wonder why alpe tt427 makes around 650rwhp at 4800???

For a turbo you want 0* overlap. A rule of thumb is to take the average of the durations and divide by 2, which will give you the LSA you need to be at 0*.

I'd also recommend a reverse split for a turbo. I tried a 230/236 .591/.600 114lsa and a 236/230 .600/.600 115lsa. I like the second cam much better -- stronger, a little smoother, and quieter.

When you talk to the sponsor, make sure you're talking to one with turbo experience

I think way too many people get too carried away on cams with turbos. just keep it mild and on a wide lobe sep and you should be fine. 0n 11.8psi my 347 made 647 @ 6100 on slicks. drivetrain issues forced us to stop the pull there. it would have been well over 700 if we could have pulled it to 7k on radials like we normally did with that engine. the 222/228-115 sc cam from the D1 set-up was still in the car. I believe that properly sized turbos and exhausts are much more important than cam selection as long as you keep the cam mild and on a 114+ lobe seperation.
