Jim, this is my take on it. The Stock Crank is an excellent, if not one of the all time best cranks EVER made! It WILL handle the power, and has. No one in their right mind would "recommend" it, if not from a sales point, then liability. I have customers, if you will, that ask what Nitrous kit I would recommend for them, and I tell them I dont recommend nitrous....however, I do list the parts I have installed on my car, or others, and my opinion of them. As it is now, my forged shortblock was built for heavy nitrous use, and I hope that all goes well, I can put down near that mark. When it was planning time, I asked for retention of the stock crank for economy and reliability issues.
I agree if you have the money to throw at it, it would be a smart thing to do, for insurance reasons. But, I do not feel if setup properly it is required or REALLY NEEDED.
The rest, Callies, Oliver, etc type rods, and JE, Wiseco Diamond pistons, however I might build a 347 using Mahle's to see how they handle power.
