Default What does "forged" mean?

From reading on the forum I have learned that getting forged blocks, rods, and pistons are a must if you but lots of boost on your engine. But what exactly is the forging process? How do you do it? Just one of those things I don't know. Thanks!

Forging is a process where the billet material is machined to an exact weight that the product need to be to fill out a die based on area. It will then be heated to over 2000 degrees. Then it will be put into a forging die and either pressed to up to 15,000 tons of pressure or "hammered" with a large hammer. Hammer force is anywhere up to about 1 million foot pounds of energy depending on application. This is done in several different stages consisting of a bust operation to preform the metal to a certain shape. Then a finish die to form it to the exact shape, then a trim operation to remove all excess flash. Between each operation the metal must be monitored for temperature very carefully, and heated and cooled at carefully monitored rates. This creates an extremely strong, pure, and dense grain structure in the part.
