Default Turbo questions....

i'm trying, really i am Reckless.

Anyways, what precautions can you take to prevent premature failure of a turbo system for our cars? what can you do prevent problems with a turbo that may cause an engine to blow. like for n2o, you would use the fpss and the window switch and WOT switch. anything out there like that stuff for a turbo. i want to run one very conservatively at first to save the motor and trans, but still have some added HP. the motor would be in the process of being built as soon as i get the turbo to run the higher boost numbers. any ideas or recommendations.

Hmmm...mainly control detonation by making sure you have enuff fuel and not too much timing or boost. You will HAVE to have a fuel pressure gauge
and something like autotap or a scanmaster to monitor 02 sensors and knock retard. Also you will need a boost gauge so you can monitor how much boost you are running. Start with low boost....monitor and go from there. Its nothing different than what the Nitrous people should be doing. I assume you will be getting your pcm programmed?

OCTANE!!!!

please, please, please, make sure you have enough octane to handle your timing/boost combination.

a fuel system that can supply the proper amount of fuel is a requirement as well. Both pump and injectors.

watch things close. My scanmaster is propbably my most useful gauge right now. anything other than 0.0 for KR and get out of it

with 16° timing, 100+ octane, and 13 psi (yes 13 ) i made 660 RWTQ. stock motor.

it's not recommended you try it. but it's amazing what the proper combo on a stock motor can do.

FWIW, i've been running 7+ psi for 23k miles now. more than half of that over 10 psi.

y2khawk :

I am new to turbos and am currently waiting for the ARE TT for the ybody to come out.
When you say stock motor, it that stock cubes and heads???
Are you running forged pistons?

Also what sort of timing do you run when doing 12 or so psi??

also, are you using an adjustable boost regulator to adjust the boost on the fly from 7-16 if needed?? Is this some gizmo (the regulator) that you can mount in the car like those ricers have???

also, on a 408 motor (6.0 block and 4.0 crank) block with ARE stg2 heads and cam what kind of general numbers to you think are possbile with 10-12 psi??

thanks

well i'm looking into some Delphi or SVO 42lb injectors along with the walbro intank fuel pump. now i only want to run 5-6psi TOPS of boost at this point and time. got the air/fuel and boost gauge. fuel pressure gauge is something that will be needed. i have autotap, but should i invest in a scanmaster then instead? thanks for the help guys!

Chris

ps-computer will be dyno tuned to perfection hopefully. spend as much as it takes to have that happen so i have no worries.

Autotap will be fine for monitoring. 42# injectors will be great and allow for you to turn up the boost later as well. Harlan is right of course...octane is very important. I had Ed Wright tune my pcm so I can run 7psi on 93 octane. I only really feel safe running 5-6 psi on 93 as I havent been to a dyno yet with a wideband to see where my whole combo is at.
