Default harmonic dampener vs normal pulley

on a boosted stroker getting revved to a max of 7000 is it really necessary or worthwhile to get a dampener instead of just a stock pulley for the crank?

It would not be absolutely necessary but it is worthwhile when looking at long term longetivity. Bob

The factory pulley is a torsional damper just like the aftermarket ones except it is made for a lower RPM range and the outer ring isnt 'captive' so it can seperate and fly off if the rubber fails. Havent seen one fail yet but I did see a C5 one come apart enough to start rubbing on the rack and pinion so it is possible. Back in the old days it was also common for the outer rings to explode at higher RPM, putting a stock 30 year old damper on a 8000rpm BBC wasnt a real good idea and thats why the current 10.99 NHRA SFI damper rule is in place.

At 7000+rpm I would have an aftermarket one regardless of the rules. There are several out there, ATI, fluidamper, march, ASP and powerbond that are SFI for the LS1. As far as any of them being an improvement over stock I would say the ATI or fluidamper but if you reat their atvertising they both say that are better then the other The ATI is probably the most poplar with the LS1 crowd but I would highly recommend calling them and getting a recommendation which one to use. On my old 7500rpm 414 they stressed not to use the underdrive version at all.

The powerbond that speedinc sells is a good compromise, its stock design, can get it 10% underdrive and is fairly cheap. Thats what I had on my 414 and it worked fine, and its SFI approved. I never got around to putting the ATI on.

If you need one to use with a blower the ATI is the only way to go though. FWIW I still have the stock damper with the SDCE pulley, the SDCE pulley wont let the outer ring slide off and I shift at 6700 or less so I feel pretty safe with it.

i have a turbo app so im not even really concerned about it slipping off or any of that like you have to deal with a s/c er app.so if u have a stock harmonic balancer what pulley are you talking about?i dont know a heck of alot about all the pulleys so bare with me.

After doing some research I am going with the ATI Super Damper (p/n 917242) & pinning it with their kit. Don't want that balancer to spin & ruin your crank! Many of the sponsors sell it or can get it for you.

i dont need it pinned as i have a T76GTS turbo not a supercharger application so i dont have to worry really about belt slip or any of that,i just wanted to know if it was necessary or made a huge difference if i stayed with a stock balancer as opposed to a dapener.everybody feel free to post what you think its all open.im saying a max rev of 7000 to stay on the safe side, more likely itll be lower than that.
