one thing is you get what you pay for.
finding junk yard turbos that can suplly the ls1 with enough air is hard, most just go and buy a good turbo for their needs.
Masterpower turbos are cheap turbos that can push enough air to feed the ls1.
a few of us have made a home set up do a search for 6.0 manafolds or truck manafolds and you can find some info on it.
others have went the dy route with an sts style, might be cheaper that way but it wont perform as well.

unless your a good welder, great fabricator, and have access to a wide array of tools, this may not be the project for you, you may be very dissapointed at the outcome, also you would need at least 3k to even come close to getting it running right, dont forget about the tune, fuel system, gauges, and intercooled is a must on 10:1 compression, thats if you dont need anything else for your engine before or after you go into boost, ie pushrods, valvesprings, internal engine parts, ect.... the parts add up very quickly.... if you have a spare beater vehicle that you dont mind rolling off a cliff, it might be wise to give a go on that first... you can allways sell it as a turbo car if it ends up working out and get some $$ back, the learning experience will be invaluable...

It could be done, although not for $500 dollars. An LS1 is not the car to be your first turbo build. The motor architecture in it's stock form is very unforgiving (cast pistons, high compression, expensive electronics) with all that being said you can make tons of hp with a properly built turbo install, I would look at all the kits available to get ideas on how you want to handle piping, read up on turbocharger theory (it's all over the net and can also be found at reputable book stores) and then do some searches here for some more knowledge.

Dont let these guys discourage you from trying it on your own. Im going to start the install next winter, im just collecting parts right now. If you go with 6.0 manifolds it really doesnt require "that much" fabrication. Just keep researching and you will learn a lot. I picked up "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. Its a GREAT read to get you to understand the theory behind turbocharging, and how everything works.

Although the LS1 isnt a very forgiving engine for a first turbo build, its not that bad of a platform to start out with. A good tune, and plenty of fuel will keep the motor living for quite a while.
