Default Turbo for road race?

I am going to build me a Mustang LX notchback with a 347 LS1 in it for fun roadracing and as a dailydriver. I want to put a smaller turbo on it and was looking for a turbo that will spool quickly 2500 rpm and still hold boost to 6500 rpm but not produce that much boost. 5-7 range. Any suggestions..??

Well I have to have a DD ********. And a fast one at that. The Camaro will get done as well and drag your nuts anywhere you want to go. It will be nice to have a 500 h.p. DD and a 1000 h.p. drag car to. The LX will be easy to build.

Twin T3 .60/.63 from a turbo thunderbird would probably be the easiest to get your hands on.

They're undersized for you application, but should come into boost fairly quickly. they'll be close to their surge limit at redline, but as long as you have a good intercooler system, and don't run the car at redline for extended periods of time, you should be OK.

You can pick up those turbo's on E-bay pretty regular for less than $300. That's the route I would go, but I'm a broke *** and would use a cheaper turbo that wasn't quite sized right in lieu of a properly sized turbo for much more $$$.

We worked with a Aussie LS1 that road races, the unit we ended up with was a extremely modded 66mm hybrid we built with a .81A/R housing. Car would pull to 6300-6400 and hit boost coming out of low speed turns at 2100rpms or so depending on what gear he was in. Great unit and we have yet to find any unit to match it in peformance.

I road raced my '93 LX for years with a turbo engine. I originally ran the Incon twin (GT35R's) kit on a stock long block and later switched to a TTi race kit (single 60-1 hifi). Lag was never an issue. In fact the smaller twins came on almost too quickly , making for a "light switch" feeling of power delivery. This made it tricky to carefully apply just the right amount of power on corner exit at lots of tracks. The switch to the larger single made it easier to modulate, with more top end power (I also changed to TFS heads/intake and an F303 cam). I never really felt the need for a stroker bottom end, since there was already more torque available than my slicks could plant.

Tune carefully and you shouldn't have any trouble at reasonable (~500rw)power levels for as long as your tire budget allows...
