Default What are cars like ours worth?

I don't have anything for sale so not putting it in the f/s section.

everyone with a car that is more than stock with a bolted on kit.. cars thave have more or less been made over into forced induction machines....

what if you wrecked it? what if you had to place a value on it?

i figure as it sits i am 50k in parts in my car... including the car.. is it worth.. 30? 35.. 40?

post what you think you could get for your car.

i seen someone trying to sell a 2002 bolt on ss for like 20k... and i bet people will still pay that much for a stock 2002... would people pay 40 for the same car with a built engine, trans, rear, suspension, FI system etc.

what if i wrecked my car tomorrow and smashed up all that was good about it.. and insurance only offers a check for like $8500 bux.

thoughts please

Get your car appraised and make sure your insurance company recognizes the value of the appraisal.

I've talked to my insurence company about that and when I finally get a lot of money invested in my can then I'll have my insurance company individually insure the parts that have been installed on the car.

David, as you know, I am going through a tiny bit of that with my totaled daily driver right now.... [ https://ls1tech.com/forums/multimedia-exchange/448994-daily-driver-z-wrecked-pic.html ] The only way to make sure you are covered is with photos of what is on the car (receipts/records help) and then to have additional comprehensive added (which is cheap) to protect the specific items.

I am going through the wringer because the car was totaled, and even though it wasn't my fault, the other party's insurance is giving me fits because I didn't have the items on file with my OWN insurance company...

So to everyone in this 'place' of FI, I suggest a good set of pics, document what you can, estimate a value, and then add a comprehensive portion to your policy that is designed to cover this; it's much cheaper than you would expect.

...just my 2cents.

Two possibilities.

1) Go through insurance for collector vehicles. They underwrite based on the TOTAL value of the car, including modifications, as well as the "collectibility" of your car. In this case, F-Bodies no longer in production as well as the added benefits of being SS, WS6, etc.

2) What I have done. Regular insurance so that all of my vehicles are on one policy, but I have an "additional coverage" waiver for my mods. $8k worth, which although runs me an extra $160 every six months, protects my investments as that money goes in my pocket if something happens. No questions asked

www.grundy.com. They do specialty insurance, you can't use teh car for going to work, school or daily errands, but they will insure the car for hwat you tell them it's worth, no apprasial needed. Pictures, description of the car, and all that needed, and they will not cover a race car... but none of us actually do that anyway LOL.

I did it on my car, and it's costing me 584 dollars a year, for 40 grand of agreed value.... more then enough to replace my car and then some. Cost per year goes up with teh amount of coverage you want. no mileage limits either.

My car was not near yours but here’s what I had:

1999 SS
Forged 347
Modded TTi kit
Lightly P&P heads and Cam
42lb injectors---with a couple of pumps
a bunch of suspension crap
wideband/O2
Alky kit
Spec 3 clutch w/ built T-56
Chrome SS rims
custom Z06 style leather seats
Badass sound system (all Alpine, couple of 10” subs
42k miles
Perfect interior, couple of exterior flaws (Only in Texas can you back into a ******* plow a put a small hole in your bumper)

Two days ago with no alky and a mail order tune at 10psi it put down 531rwhp running 10.0a/f

Two week ago I sold it a friend for $13k and a 2002 Mazda B3000 truck with 85k. Seeing the prices that some people are asking for h/c cars, he got a great deal, but I’m happy with what I got too.

FWIW, I would have asked for $20K to start, had I been trying to sell it (he came to me when I mentioned I might be selling)

Later,
Dave

there's an 02 WS6 6sp 36k miles w/ built motor, P1SC, etc etc going for $21k around here.
I got $11k from insurance when i totalled my 99Z in Oct 04. It was a bolt-on, cam only car w/ 108k miles. i had about $13k total in it.
Maybe a week ago, i got offered about $7500 for my 98 TA and ive got around $18k total in it.
think id be lucky as hell to get $20k for the SS

I'm going through this right now with my Insurance company. I have a FEMA trailer park moving in right next to my subdivision and want to make sure my Z28 is fully insured if stolen. I have right at $20,000 in it and figured replacement value to be $25,000. If it were stolen tomorrow, I'd get $6,000. They can't seem to figure out how to insure it for a value though. To them, it's just a car. . .

Call Grundy, 1-800-338-4005 Simple phone cal, and as long as your car isn't daily driven, and stored indoors, I'm sure they, or one of their underwriters will take it, for the dollar value YOU say it is worth.

Most important thing to remember;

"This is a street car. No Mr. Insurance Agent Man... it's never been to the track."

I have what's called a stated value insurance policy on my Z06 and the race car.

My insurance agent came out and looked at them,I provided a list of mods with prices and they gave me a price.

If the Vette is stolen, etc and a total loss I get a $60,000 check.

It was very fair price I might add.

I'll have him back out when my racecar is finished.

True.. grundy will not insure a race car... but I don't think that any insurance company will really, so you're taking the risk every track trip anyway.

As far as I'm concerned... as long as a car has a plate on it, it's a street car

Insurance policy I have is set up like Dave's is.... only I am good for 40K

You dont know how true that is, wont discuss it on a forum but be REAL careful what you tell your agent - it can come back and bite you big time.

I know mine asked me if I ever raced the car.. I replied no, that's what I race radio controlled cars for. The guy looked at me funny.... then after walking him down to my basement and showing him 10 years worth of that stuff, and about 100 trophy's all on a shelf around the room, he had alot better understanding. As I told him.. " the real car is for show. I'd be lying if I said I never get, but race it, hell no, that's worth too much $. A toy that's worth 800 bucks, sure.... noone dies if that crashes"

He agreed, and in bewildermint at the masses of radio controlled car racing equipment, went upstairs, and left.

That was 2 years ago... no problems at all, and that was when they came out to look at the car, before the policy was written.

Definately get it appraised, get a reputable appraiser to come look at the car, make sure you have every single receipt you can find. You will probablly have to get special insurance for the car but it is well worth it, trust me. I had a 88 Iroc 383 with a ATI procharger, $5000 paint job, $4500 stereo and pretty much everything else that could be done to it and I lost the car in a garage fire before the appraiser came by to look at it. I had $30k in parts above the price of the car and when it came time to get my insurance check they only offered me $6000, which really pissed me off considering that I just got the car back from getting a $5000 paint job, I eventually got them up to $12000 but that was as far as they would go. Lessen learned, always get the car appraised when you have that much money invested.

Very good to hear. I definately need to look into that.

Is that seperate insurance or is that in addition to regular insurance?

I definately want to look into it.

If I were to sell my car, the minimum I would take is 55-60k, 50k if I wanted to just get out of it quicker.

It took a while to get this setup, so anyone interested in it(if i were to sell it) would recognize that time= money too.

No, regular auto insurance.. just like progressive or whatever, but it's for specialty auto cars. Call the 1800 # I listed above, they will send you a packet, and you should just have to fill it out, and take some pictures of the car and submit it. I had an agent from a insurance firm at my house the day I filled it out, as I was redoing all my auto insurance, and my parents were too, so he happen to come out.. but usually they don't even send anyone.
