Default Engine compartment paint on turbo setup?

I have the old engine out of my 1985 Jag and am waiting on a low-compression shortblock from HPE. I am going to steam clean the entire engine compartment, but I'm also considering scuffing and painting it as well. I would paint it the original color (red). I am worried that new paint won't hold up to the heat of a turbo setup. Any thoughts? How does your original or second paint job stand up to the heat? Where does it fail? Any ideas whether I should repaint or just leave the stock paint? Taking the engine compartment down to bare metal is not an option! I don't have that kind of time or patience!

I'm not sure why a turbo setup would subject the paint to more heat. If the turbos are kept away from the paint and perhaps, if needed, blanketed then I wouldn't guess you'd have a problem.

Do you know where the turbos will ultimately mount?

if the paint peel's its going to be due to prep. work, if your doing a quick spray can paint job dont even worry about it, if it ever gets scratched or something you can grab the spray can and hit that spot, use some high heat engine paint if your worried about temp's...... if your doing a real automotive paint job it will hold up fine to heat, I've painted wheels single stage and they've been holding up for well over a year w/out problems from heat, next time you go for a good drive, stop and check your wheel to see how hot it is...

Sounds good. The reason I wasa concerned is because the manifolds and the downpipe will probably be pretty close to the walls of the engine compartment.

I planned on having it painted by a good body shop. What kind of prep work would be required? Just cleaning w/ wax & grease remover, scuffing, cleaning again, and then a tack rag right before it's painted? or am I missing something?

I don't think the body shop will accept you doing the prep work (well, they'll do it all over again). The reason being that if your prep work isn't up to snuff, their paint job will fail and you'll be arguing over who's fault it is.
Since they are a good body shop, their prep will be fine.

If your hot exhaust parts are going to come within a couple inches, you might want to take the added precaution of having them ceramic coated. That will keep a lot of the heat from leaching out. It's a good idea anyway for durability and performance reasons, so saving your paint is another reason to add to the list.

Yes, very good point about the body shops wanting to do their own prep work... this is true! However my situation is a little different... my family runs a business where we buy, sometimes fix, and sell late model vehicles. We farm out most of body work to shops in our area. One of the guys told me he'd come down and paint my engine bay for me (we have a spray booth we don't really use anymore since we stopped keeping our own body shop) if I bought the materials and did the prep work. He mentioned using something that sounded like an all-in-one prep gel that you rub on and rub off... but I wasn't sure if that would be enough. Any thoughts?

I am definitely planning to ceramic coat all the exhaust under the hood. I am worried that the downpipes are going to come pretty close to the sides of the engine compartment though, because the layout was designed for a more narrow inline 6 engine.
